Got new 700M...have some issues

Hey all...first time here. Well, I just received my new I700M and I'm loving it but I have three issues I can't figure out. First, I can't update any of the bios on the dell site. When I do, it tells me that I have to have the AC plugged in and with the battery at atleast 10% charged in order to update the bios, but eventhough everything is set, I still can't update it. I don't know what the problems is.

Second, when I load cds into the DVD/CDRW drive it makes all kinds of loud noises. The laptop starts to vibrate, the touchpads keys buzz, and worse of all, the drive itself is making clanking/clunking noises when it spins. I can stand the the laptop vibrating, but the drive is making some ugly noises like it's banging on to something. It might be a bad cd drive, but it seems like it's hitting against the walls of the laptop as well. I don't know...it's pretty bad. This can't be normal right? I've never experienced this on laptops before.

Third, the harddrive makes clicking noises. Every few seconds it clicks. "click, click, click" Eventhough I'm not using it, it'll still make that noise. Is this normal or is the drive bad? Is there a fix?

I hope you guys can help me out or at least point me in the right direction. This is my first Dell and although I happy with my purchase, these minor issues or giving me a headache. Thanks in advance for any help.

1. Yeah i tried to upgrade to A02 but it gave me that. I'm taking that as a sign to avoid the upgrade, lol

2. I have the same drive, but no vibration or sounds. Try ejecting the Drive, not the tray, but the whole drive and putting it back in.

3. I've heard that's just the head reseting itself due to powersaving, there's a fix by hitachi that takes away that noise. Do a search on hitachi hd clicking

I always go out of my way to flash BIOS'es and such outside of Windows in DOS when I can. The Windows-based flash is too flakey to be trusted IMHO. Linked above is a zipped .ISO to create a bootable CD containing this latest 700m A02 BIOS used to flash my 700m.

Do not upgrade your bios useing windows. Your laptop will be a brick and you will have to send it off to dell the next day . I learned my lesson

I went o A02 in windows (because I had just bought so I figured if it becomes a brick I can return it), but I agree with the general sentiment about windows flashing. Running A02 w/o problems. Saw the other thread about teh fan on AC but haven't had a chance to check it out (mostly use it on that great 8 cell battery)

you didn't mention which HD you have? I have the fujitsu 40 gb and it's pretty quiet. Not silent; I hear it going about its business, but nothing that sounds alarming.
My CD burner is the Sony and it makes a lot of noise spinning up and accessing data- like VVVVOOOOMM... same thing as other noisy drives do too. Nothing that sounds like my disc might be in danger. Seems to run ok. Didn't notice the keys buzzing though. You might reset it or ask them to send you another and swap out that 1 part.

Oops, forgot to mention...it's the 40 gig one, I don't know the maker. I can hear it loading and such which is normal to me, but the clicking noise is new for me. I've never heard that before on my other laptops so I don't know if it's normal. Is there a fix for this one?

But yea, about the cd drive, it's the dvd player, and CDRW burner one...not the dvd burner itself. It does make some unsual loud noises kinda like..."khut, khut, khet" when it's loading and then when it winding down. A couple times, my dvds wouldn't eject. For people that have this model, does it just spins and winds down..."smoothly" and not sound like somebody's trying to strangle it?

This really sucks because it's my first Dell and I was not expecting this. The only thing I WAS expecting was the bad service and it seems like I will have to face them after all.

I believe HDD clicking is normal, it is not Dell specific rather HD specifc, and most CDRW/DVDRW drives do, when they spin up, spin up really fast and vibrate, I've always just passed it off, but that you would have to blame NEC, remember Dell is just a sum of OEM parts

Is it really normal for the clicking noise? It's really annoying....like clock ticking around your ear. It just found out it's a 40gb hitachi. Sucks!

I also took out the dvd drive and put it back in, still the same problem...loud clunking loading noises.

Looks like I have to call Dell for fix.

Any other 700M owners experiencing these problems? I'm beginning to think it's just me!

I received a 700m and mine has no problems you have described. however, i've got a light leakage problem with my LCD instead. my HD is also hitachi 40gig and its really silent and makes NO clicking sound. good luck with your exchange.

Lucky you...sorry about your LCD though. You should get it fixed.

HD clicking is NOT normal. abarrant clicking means the needle is moving for no apparent reason, and that is bad. spin up noises are fine, as are noises like a lid closing, but not click, click, click. The firmware update people are talking about for the Hitachi is old and does nothing since the hitachi's distributed after that problem have updated firmware. If you really want to go through testing out, you can go to:
http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/si...id=TPAD-HDFIRM

bios upgrade for A02 in windows is just fine. Have done it on several 700m's now without a problem. make sure you are downloading the execution file from the dell site. then installing it. do not choose install when you click download. download the file first, then click the .exe file

the cd drive is gonna make some noise, and depending on which cd, may make more noise than the other...if it is really bad, from what it sounds like, call dell for a replacement. it really shouldn't be doing all of that.

I will do as you guys suggested. The clicking is annoying. I swear I was at the library and people were staring at me. I don't think it was at the nice new laptop! It was the noise! I also found out that my 700M already has A02 installed. Also, the cd drive is really bad. It does this with all cds. The only time it makes the noises is when it first loads and when it winds down. In between that it sounds like normal spinning.

Thanks for all the help!

Hard Drive Issue

Rivvin-

I had the same problem with my 700m, call Dell and ask for a replacement other than Hitachi. They sent me a Fujitsu 60gb and it is dead silent all the time.

I have an 8600 and it does the clicking too, its so anoying I almost get a headache.
Its a Hitachi 80 gig, will dell replace it even though my 8600 is a refurb?
viperguy, if it is still under warranty, dell will if it is a problem drive.
rivvin, as far as the cd drive, mine is fairly loud at spin up as well. the problem is that they are flimsy...and the high speed rating will cause the vibrations and noises, b/c there isn't much there to dampen it. so long as the drive is not giving you read errors or record erros it is fine. if it is excessively causing vibrations, then i'd suggest getting it replaced.

It is I just bought it about a week ago. I really dont want to put any programs on it if its a bad drive. So if I call them up will they just give me a new one or will I have to send it to them?

Thanks for the help
they will send you one and then you have a certain amount of time to return the defective one. you use the same package as the one they send you. there will be an invoice with a return shipping label. you call the carrier to have it picked up. driver signs invoice, you keep invoice so dell doesn't charge you for the new drive. you will get a bill from dell charging you for the drive, but it will say ignore it if you sent the defective drive back
