What version

Thread Starter
Now that i have purchased laptops for my children, I was going to take one of the Desktops Pentium 256 meg and install Linux.

I planned on buying a package, been doing a little bit of reading.......What would be the most idiot proof version of Linux to buy? Seems there are quite a few out there......

I was contenplating the SUSE 8.3.......but no LESS than nothing about Linux. This is now a spare box and I would like to install it to see what all the fuss is about.

The software is certainly cheap enough.

Thanks for ya'lls help

You can buy it if you want but's it's easier to download it from a mirror and burn it to CD. Don't worry it 100% legal. It's a lot cheaper too. The only caveat being you don't get a paper manual but most distros have very good support forums which I find faster and easier then an outdated manual. The best part about downloading one instead of buying one (you can always send a donation to the distro of your choice..) is you try them all and find the one you like best. The major distros have simple GUI installs that are basically point and click. Most binary distros like Mandrake, Redhat take only 30-2hrs to install and get up and running. Gentoo will take considerably longer as you compile as you go.

IMHO distros of choice in some sort of order
Mandrake
SuSe
Red Hat
Debian
Gentoo (the DIY linux)
