My new ZD8000

Here are some hi res pics of my new zd8000. It's a monster and I absolutely love it!

Spercs are as follows:

Intel Pentium 4 processor 550 with HT Technology 3.4GHz (800MHz)
1GB Dual Channel DDR2 400Mhz memory
60GB 7200rpm (Purchased seperately)
OPTICAL DRIVE - 8x DVD+⁄-RW
17.0" WSXGA+ WVA BrightView RESOLUTION - 1680 x 1050
ATI Mobility Radeon X600 with PCI Express graphics with 256MB video memory
TV-OUT PORT - S-Video
LAN - 802.11b⁄g; Integrated 10⁄100 LAN
SPEAKERS - Harmon Kardon speakers
CARD READER - 6-in-1 integrated Digital media reader slot
USB PORT - 4 x USB 2.0
PARALLEL PORT - Not specified by Manufacturer
SERIAL PORT - Not specified by Manufacturer
PC CARD SLOT - ExpressCard⁄54 PC Card slot
IEEE1394 PORT - Yes
BLUE TOOTH - Yes

The screen is incredible. I really can't complain about this machine at all.

I use a second screen for my web development - waiting on a Dell 20" LCD. I also have a Lacie 250GB External Hard Drive and the machine is sitting on an iCurve notebook stand. I was a bit worried at first thinking the ZD would be too heavy for this, but it's been just fine. Hardly any wobble at all.

10/10

Looks nice. I think when I bought mine I should have gotten that 7200 RPM and just got an external HD. Did you install it yourself? Also when your first started how much HD space was taken up. I got the 100 GB 4200 rpm and it was alrighty filled with 30 gigs of stuff!!! I looked through the entier HD and i only found 16 gigs. I dont know where the rest of my space went?

I changed the hard disk over myself. It was very easy. I reinstalled XP Pro and all the drivers were on a CD so it wasn't difficult.

The 7200RPM drive makes a BIG difference.

Nice setup

Vgolf,
I'm happy to see that you have your workspace in a nice open and clean room; not a dark, dirty, and hidden corner where the Troglodytes meander about.

Very nice setup.

Keep it clean, and keep it simple.

Does this software run well?

Hey, I am thinking about purchasing the zd8000 to replace my desktop, and I just wanted to know if anyone has run any of these programs without a problem:
-Photoshop
-Premiere
-After Effects
-Illustrator
-Dreamweaver and Flash MX

Thanks a lot.

I just loaded Premiere for video editing and it worked EXTREMELY well.

I don't use any of the others. For photo editing, I use Microsoft Digital Imaging Pro. Works very well without the learning curve of Photoshop. Sure, I'll get around to it. I mean, if I can use Premiere, then Photoshop should be my next step, right? Usually it's the other way around.

Thanks

Alright, great thanks. This is good news because I am going to need to do a lot of editing.

What kinda battery life do you get, please?
I don't know about anyone else, but I don't use the battery much. I'm always plugged in no matter where I go, and I try not to use the battery. I think I'll give it a run this weekeend to see how it works out.

Just out of curiosity. Being as the 8000 series uses the P4 chip...have any of you run into any performance slowdowns? As the P4 is notorious for generaling a lot of heat.

Thanks people!

Nice Nice, I should get mine next week.

Just wondering though, can the ZD8000 handle a 2nd hdd? Or is it the 1 only?
Just one unfortunately, but it's probably cheaper to go with an external anyways.

Bummer, the laptop looks big enough to fit in two

You would think. This thing is a tank!

Just an update...last week my screen went completely blank. Took it to HP support here in Melbourne...diagnosis..completely new display needed.

Thank god it's under warranty (I have 3 years extended warranty) as the screen costs $1500 here in Australia.

Worked out OK cos I had a couple of dead pixels on the old one...none on the new one.

Wow, thanks for the update. It's nice to know that you had no issues in getting it replaced. That makes me feel better about extended warranties and why they're not a bad deal on notebooks.

Lucky you vGolder! $1500 to replace a notebook screen. That would have hurt!!

It obviouisly pays to have gone with a name company like HP.

Curious...does the keyboard and surrounding area get very warm being as it's a P4-based notebook? I ask because I'm considering the zd8110us. And, that I have played around with the last model, the zd8010us (not 100% sure on the model number at the moment) and found it almost "hot" to the touch. A little too much heat for my liking.

Have you run into any performance problems you'd link to the P4 chip?

Thanks!
