Artic Silver 5

I just bought some artic silver 5 from www.easypckit.com and I was planning to use this on the gpu. I had opened it earlier and noticed there was very little artic silver applied to it. Would it be a good idea to add some? Also their website has instructions for applying it to the cpu but not gpus. How much should I add? Step by step instructions would help for both the gpu and cpu for lappys because I'm a noobie. Thanks.

Opened up what? Looked at what? Arctic silver on what? Simply slathering AS5 on something doesn't cool it down. Is there a heatsink on the CPU? Fan?

The point of arctic silver is to eliminate the gaps between a CPU (GPU) and the heatsink. The gaps/air pockets prevent heat transfer. A heatsink and CPU, no matter how finally lapped, has microscopic hills and valleys. You apply a THIN coat of AS to eliminate those gaps, to increase the heat transfer from CPU to heatsink--the heatsink then disappates the heat into the case, and the fans move the heat form the case out of the laptop.

So, does your GPU have a heatsink/fan? If not, you're wasting your time.

You want just enough to put a very thin layer on it. All it's for is filling in the microscopic "gaps" between the mating surfaces of the chip and the heatsink.

AS5 is conductive, so if you use too much, it will ooze out and possibly short-circuit other components (just like spilling water into it). A very thin layer.

Should of specified this was for the 9860....

yeah ok I planned on using it on the gpu but I have no common sense what so ever so i opened the battery and put it all in there. And then instead of looking at the gpu (since thats what I wanted to use it on) I looked inside the card reader.

It was a joke....

well there goes ridicule, sarcasm and allegory all in one thread, not to mention parody, irony and stoicism... and no doubt most people here don't have a clue what I am talking about... what ever happened to a classical education...

I had a feeling it was a joke, but I couldn't help but laugh thinking that there ARE people that would do that. Imagine the call to tech support...

I don't see any stoicism. I think everyone reacted quite strongly to the OP's comments.
