Fan noise on S series Sony - Page 3

I bought 2 S360's from 2 totally different vendors, one was from CA and the other from NY, and both were equally noisey. A google searcj on VAIO laptop fan noise you will result in pages and pages of relevant hits. Every review I've read (15+) either directly stated the fan was loud/annoying on the laptop they reviewed OR at least mentioned that others have voiced concerns over this issue on their laptops. AFAIK, the problem goes back at least as far as the 2XX series right up to the new Sonoma.

Amazon, Buy.com, and other vendors that have customer reviews are filled with people who've voiced concerns over the fan ...some saying they can live with it and others saying they sent it back within the first week! From all that I've read & personally experienced, and from the support ticket on the VAIO support website; I truly believe the problem is the majority rather than the minority. It's just that everyone doesn't find the fan offensive or they don't go as far as voicing their opinions publicly on forums or to Sony.

I can't agree with you more. I used RMCLOCK to undervolt the CPU and uninstall some
crappy SONY applications, now my s360p's CPU works between 39 to 42 for normal uses like web, email, the fan is tolerable to me now. I noticed someone cleaned the cpu heatpipe and use AS3 for coolong down cpu, BUT i THINK THE PROBLEM IS NOT HEAT, but the BIOS configuration that start and stop the fan.

Another issue is burning recovery DVD, I DON'T HAVE DVD BURNER ON MY 360, BUT i HAVE ONE ON MY DESKTOP, IS THERE anyway that I can use the desktop dvd burner to create the recovery DVD? each time I try, it just detect the only cd burner on my 360 and won't gimme an option to choose other media or output to a ISO file.

Just read THIS on the Inq, should be interesting if all the features actually work.

mlgbwk,

I was in the same situation when I got my S and I couldn't get it to work with anything but the built-in cdrw, maybe someone else knows how. I just sucked it up and used 7 cds.

You could always ghost the hard drive partition over to your PC and then back it up?

HerbieC,
If you ever get a chance to open up your laptop can you find the part number for your fan/heatsink assembly? I want to compare to see if they are the same or not.

I myself have a S360 and I don't find the fan to be that noisy but for curiousity want to see if the part numbers are identical or not.

On side note, wish Sony would raise the off/on temp for the fan or someone make a utility to adjust the fan temps.

I just checked out that software, found it on the other thread of undervolting P-M though...
It's great. Much easier and more options than RM Clock. Hope this guy can make fan control for S360/S270. Will someone make a request? Or I will.

Hello,

I'm planning on purchasing a VAIO S480. They just came out about a month. I called SONY today and asked a Sales Rep about the noisey fan probs. He said that there was a problem with the noise, but they fixed all the S-Series a few months ago. He said that now the fan is quiet.

Maybe you guys could have SONY replace all your S-series notebooks for the same model as the one you currently have except it would be the updated version.

Good luck!

Ask them what they did. If they put in a better fan, we could order the new fan. Hopefully their "fix" isn't just the change in the settings of when the fan kicks in like it appears they have (with people stating it turns on after 50 degrees).

Who said the fan turns on after 50? Do they have an older S?

For the Sonoma based S, the fan turns on 55 and up, for us S360 and older users it's at 40 and up.

I just called the Sony Sales Dept to ask them what temp the cooling fan turns on. I also asked if they have replaced the entire fan or just changed the settings. The Rep just told me to call Tech Suppt. He gave me this number: 866.256.9383. Or just call their main number @ 877-865.SONY and press the correct numbers to get to tech suppt.

Tech Support put me on hold for about 45 minutes trying to find this info out. Finally, she transf me to a premiere Tech supprt specialist or whatever they're called. She said they cannot release that type of info out to the public. What kind of bs is that? I was like, hello...I am planning on spending $3000 I would like to know this info beforehand. If not, I'll go with a diff brand of notebook. She took down my info and said someone will call me back within 2 business days. She said she never heard of any probs like that, and she asked her associate that said the same thing. I said I read many reviews where people experienced that same prob w/ the S-series notebooks. She said as far as the S480...it is new, so that shouldn't have a problem.

If I get a reply back, I'll post it for you guys. I'm planning on buying the S480, I don't think it will have a prob. I s/w another person on this forum that has it and said the fan was good after he made some changes with the settings. (Does anyone know what settings changes I should make if I buy it?) If they don't get back to me, I'm prob going to buy it anyway, since it's new plus I have the warranty. So, feel free to call tech suppt also. If you do, please post your responses here.

Good luck with it.

*****UPDATE*****

I heard back from her associate. He said this type of information has not been released, but he has not heard anything about the fan on the S480 having a problem.

I purchased the S480 anyway, I figure I can always have tech support help if there's a prob. Sorry, I thought I would be able to help you guys. I don't know anything about the other S-series models. Hopefully Tech Support can help you guys.

Good luck!
