Internet Explorer Browser Question

The forum has been very helpful to me so far, so I hate to ask such a simple question, buttttt;

I have XP in my new I9200 Dell. The adress bar at the header of the web browser has an arrow with a drop-down listing of all the websites you've typed in. It used to be (before I started screwing around with things) that I could click on that arrow and the list would drop down.
Now, I have to type a partial web address before the list drops down.

Anyone know what I might've changed to toggle that off?

Is the arrow still there?

Yes, the arrow is still there.

This morning I loaded GameXP and SafeXP, but it was working after I did that. I made changes to the options on them and rebooted, and the dropdown was working.

In order to tell you, we need more info....

Most importantly, what happens when you click on the arrow? Nothing? Drop down with empty box?

Second, when you start typing, what DOES appear, and what does not that you expected?

Explanation:

The IE explorer bar fills the address bar with information from four areas
1.Your Favorites and History folders
2.The contents of the folder you specify for files or folders
3.The contents of the left pane in Windows Explorer
4.A list of your most recently typed addresses, commands, or AutoSearch queries, which are stored in the registry

My guess is that you set up safexp to delete the items in number 4, which are the default items in the address bar if nothing is typed. When you start typing, I believe that is the point where IS starts looking for 1,2, and 3.

To know for sure, I would have to know what safexp and gamexp are...since I am unfamiliar with these programs (safexp sounds like a good bet...safe=security, equals privacy, equals paranoia.

Your "guess" is right on the money.
At one point the drop down would happen with nothing in it.
Now it only shows the last window I had open.
When I type, it drops an alphabetical list of possible auto-completes to choose from.

I want it to drop my most recent browser addys.

SafeXP just opens a menu for toggling options on/off; only a few of which you couldn't find in the OS menues, really. For example, removal of the "Help" shortcut from the "Start" menu, that sort of thing. It also allows toggling off all the crap that Media tries to send out to update itself and annoy you with pop-ups.

How few?

When you type an entry in the address bar, IE adds it to the registry key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs

As it adds them, it moves the previous url back. So...if you type in http://pctorque.com, it becomes entry

url1 : http://pctorque.com

Add www.discountlaptops.com to the bar and then IT becomes

url1 : http://www.discountlaptops.com
and http://pctorque.com becomes

url2 : http://pctorque.com

(and so on)...It saves up to 20 urls

So, if you wanted to remove only the last 10, you could write a batch file that deletes url1 through url10 values from the registry, have it run at startup (or from a script).

Something like that.

As it is, safexp has either write protected the key, or perhaps it is running in the background constantly catching and deleting them

Is there some trick to cut-n'-pasting the menues of programs that are copy-paranoid?
I wanted to post a "picture" of the SafeXP screen for you to see.

alt print screen will copy an image to memory, then paste it into mspaint (ctrl-v)
