wooo i finally ordered a lappy. I've been lurking and randomly posting here for quite some time looking at all the good deals that go by and finally decided to get one of my own.

Hurray for canadian discounts!
also because of you guys i knew to call and barter with those crazy dell guys and i got a free 7200rpm HD out of it! saved myself over $600 when it was all said and done.

my new baby will arrive in about two weeks so stay tuned for photos and a review. Specs are as follows:

1.73ghz WXGA
256m Ram (will try and 3rd party upgrade to a gig... wish me luck)
60gig 7200prm HD (woo free!)
ATI x600 128meg Vid Card
Intel 2200 wireless b/g
etc etc...

i plan on running some decent games on this thing as well as movies and possibly some note taking. All i need now is some advice on good case for it.

thanks for all your advice people!

Why the D810? Just curious why you choose this particular model. I am agonizing over my next 'puter purchase....
I'm tossing up between the D810 and an M70, at the moment the D810 is slightly ahead due to the price though.

i like the look over the 8600, there was a 15% discount which is rare for dell.ca
it has the new sonoma technology and a 128 meg vid card that will apperantly stand up to a 9700 performance wise which is perfect for me as i really only play WoW at the moment and might hit up HL2 etc... i'm not a hardcore gamer but i wanted the extra power from the x600 so i decided against waiting for the eventual inclusion of the x300 in the i6000.

the price was also right in my range, and hopefully the quote unquote trimetal case will be built well compared to the 8600 which i've heard is not THE BEST (not to rag on it, i heard it's fine, just not the best)

anyways... among other things... i'll hold my breath till it arrives and i have it in my hands. We'll see how it goes. Throw any questions my way and i'll answer em as best i can.

oh and if anyone reads this and has any good suggestions for 3rd party ram i'm gonna start pricing that stuff out now. What # of pins does the ram have? i know it's DDR2 and i'd prefer 533mhz is there anything else i need to know?

Moojangles,

Good choice of notebook. My company just ordered a D810 for me yesterday. Here are the specs for mine:

Intel® Pentium® M Processor 760 (2.00GHz) w/ATI RADEON X600 128MB
15.4 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen WUXGA LCD Panel
256MB 400MHz, DDRII SDRAM, 1 DIMM (will get 2x512MB DDR2 PC2-4200 533MHz from another vendor)
60GB Hard Drive, 9.5MM, 7200RPM
24X CD-ROM Drive
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2915 802.11 a/b/g WLAN miniPCI Card

This will be replacing my D600 with a 1.4GHz CPU. My coworker that sits next to me just recently got a D800 to replace his D600, and he got the WUXGA screen, and I loved it, so I had to get the same screen. I will be swapping the 4X DVD+RW drive from my D600 and with the CD-ROM drive in the D810 (Dell confirmed that I can do this).

As far as the RAM upgrade, I think I will get 2 of these (so they run in Dual Channel mode):
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...144-182&depa=1

I currently play a few games on my D600, which I believe has a 32MB ATI Radeon Mobility 9000. I play HL2 on that at 800x600 with medium settings and it runs fine. I also played a little bit of FarCry with about the same settings. I can only imagine how much better the X600 will be!

Let me know how it is when you get yours, because these guys here take forever to order stuff, and I'm sure you'll get yours before I get mine.

how did you get the free 7200 rpm HD

... btw, I supposed to receive it on march 1st
post #10 of 36
I just ordered mine on Tuesday the 15th with estimated ship date of march 7th. But I am sure it'll come way before that. I chose to go with 1gb ram from Dell since I compared the price between Dell and Crucial and it cost the exact same. So, to keep my troubles, I went with Dell's rams.

Cheers.

i called dell's 1-800 number (listed at the top of the site) and spoke to a sales rep. I orignally called just to check and see when the 15% discount ended. The guy i talked to said he could give me a better deal when i was going to buy it, he said he would call me later that day. He never called so i called back and spoke to another rep and said that a guy had told me i could get a better deal by speaking to him. I told him i would like to get an extra component either ram or a 7200rpm drive. He said that they were both pretty expensive and he'd have to ask his manager. So i waited on hold for 5 - 10 min (meanwhile playing World of Warcraft) and he finally let me get it! he also removed the $10 shipping and just gave me free shipping and i didn't even ask for that. So the moral of this story is, always call and bug the hell out of those reps.

oh and i'll let you guys know when i recieve it. It isn't listed on the website yet so i don't have a date other than the two weeks that the dell rep said it would take on the phone.

Please Please Please post info when you get it, that is the #1 laptop on my list right now since the i6000 only has an X300, and the M70 is so expensive.
The D810 is IMO best laptop for it's price!
too bad it couldn't be a little more cheaper so I could buy it...

The only thing I wish was different on the D810 is the lack of Firewire. I know adding a PC card isn't a hassle, but I would have liked it to be included. That is one thing the i6000 has up on the D810, plus the whole DJ thing, but it is lacking in the graphics department.

hi everyone,

firstly i want to thank all the folks who are so willingly to spend their valueable time in the forums to help fixing problems, i really appreciate this kind of generousity

i hope to be treated as the same too
im on the way to get a new notebook...probably D810..but remain these doubts that are puzzling my decision...

1. what's the difference between DDR-II and DDR2? are they both the same? and what is DDR-III then?
coz only in D810 there is a DDR-II instead of DDR2 nor DDR-III

2. is D810 better than i9300 for multimedia purpose?

3. is there a scroll features available in D810 touchpad?

thank you everyone in advance !

The D810 has a smaller screen than the i9300 by around 25%. Bigger is good for multimedia, not so good for portability (I find the D810 form factor right at the limit of portability. I can't imagine what the i9300 would be like. The extra weight is all because of the bigger screen. One can't have it both ways, unless you get an Apple Powerbook ). Within each line there is the variable of whether you go for WXGA, WSXGA (only for the D810) or WUXGA. Then there is the choice of video card: the D810 comes with the X600, around 1/3rd more powerful than the X300 on the i6000 and one option on the i9300. However the other option on the i9300 is the Nvidia 6800, one mighty gpu. If you want something similar on the D810, you have to go to its sister the Precision M70, which has an underclocked version of the 6800. The D810/M70 is a really beautiful machine. Well thought out, great keyboard, nice looks; lovely screen, just works, well.

i have just received my i9300 with WUXGA TrueLife screen and 128MB ATi x300 GPU.
i found its screen is too glossy but i like it coz it is nice (Samsung). sadly, im nearsighted...i cant see anything under the sun/light (coz of the critical refraction) and its fonts are way of too small for me. i have tried to change its res from 1920*1200 to the lesser one, i found things become oddly and fuzzy. thus i kept the res back to 1920*1200 and changed the font size to the maximum (192dpi) - it didnt seem to have much difference than the normal 15" with res 800*600 or 1024*768, so, what for wasting another $200 for that TrueLife.

now, i decide to replace it to the smaller screen with the lesser native res. like WXGA or maybe WSXGA+ (which i wish they will be much better than WUXGA). i prefer res up to 1440*900.

yeah, i really wish to have M70...but my budget has limited me. *IF* there is a 30% or $750 or above Dell Canada Small Biz coupon, i may then really think about it

antskip, may i know how much you got your M70 with those specs?

again, thanks

I purchased in Australia. For me to go from D810 to M70 with same specs, the extra cost was equivalent to that of the different gpu, an extra 10% of the total cost, which seemed pretty fair. It seems that the price differential in Canada is greater than that? But then the D810 has many options, just not the M70's gpu. Other than that gpu option the D810 and the M70 are pretty much the same, and it really is a very nice alround laptop. But if you like the size of the i9300's screen, then why not just get the WXGA option (I don't believe there is a WSXGA option for the i9300)? The WUXGA on the M70/D810 is not glossy. I like it. But if you can't bear the 17" WUXGA then you will absolutely hate the 15.4" WUXGA! Maybe you could consider the WXGA+ i9300 or the WXGA or WSXGA+ D810? (comes with mnay gpu options, comparable[X300] or better[X600] than that of the i9300 other than the Nvidia 9800).
