Dell Latitude D610 Review - Page 3

[quote=angelsfan2005]Just received the D610 yesterday (2.0Ghz, 512DDR2-400, 60GB 5400) - I'll post a more complete review as time allows. To answer some questions:

1. Headphone jack feedback: yes - it is real, and it is noticeable. This rather disappoints me, as I like to listen to music while I work. With no music playing it is very noticeable - with music it becomes less noticeable (but still noticeable during quieter parts of music). I recall hearing about an mp3 player (rio carbon?) that had some problems similiar to this... anyone have info about that, specifically potential solutions?[quote=angelsfan2005]

What graphic chip do you use a ATI x300 like me, or a integrated Intel Graphics Accelerator 900?
whats the issue exactly: Its just whine or it is noise from moving around the touchpad or trackstick or it is both: whine AND noise from headphone port??

please answer exactly! thx
cause im wondering, if the new ATI make that horribel noise.

and one new prob: after listening exactly in different modes i noticed that the fan is always on. he works always on medium level??? its that true??
that could be a bios bug.

im sure that the whine issue (not the noise from touchpad!) on headphone port is cause xp and the sigmatel driver are not compatibel. if you run linux the whine goes away, i think. dell sleep away for prog. a xp-driver for the sigmatel chip since 3 years
im on the way to hack the registry, that singel prob is a software bug and can be solved (i post in the future fo that.)
so it stays fo that touchpad and activity noise...
it could be the motherboard or the ati chip, if no one with the intel graphic has this terribel issue...

If you have questions on whether there is a port or not and as to its location, look at the technical images i uploaded at the begining of the review. I made sure that whats on those pictures is on the computer.

Im going to consolidate everything that owners post on the machine on the main review, hopefully that will cut down on duplicate questions and answers.

I saw the owner's manual and the service manual and trusted it but then I receieved some conflicting responses from others in this forum. For example, some said the d610 doesn't have the parallel port (dell's french site and the brochure also showed no parallel port). I became more suspect when I saw the part numbers listed in d610's service manual - they matched d600's part numbers. It seem to me that it was put together with haste.

BTW, whenI put on the head phones connected to my line out port on my 600m, it is like putting your ear close to a sea shell

thats the uncompatibility issue between winXP and sigmatel-driver that i talked above, but you have no noise from touchpad, trackstick and stuff, i think. right?

my d610 have 100% a parallel port for sure - no doupt!! i dont think dell manufacts different chassis for d610 and also for m20, who has the same one, one with and one without a parallel port. we all know dell is too lazy for that !!

BTW someone knows someone else who owns a new d810 or a m70 to ask him to check the headphone port there? i will hurry up dell again at monday for that, and i dont want to hear again, that this issue is completly unkown, you know what i talk.

D610s are shipping WITH parallel port. I was confused like yourself because I saw too D610s without parallel port but I am starting to think that it was the D810, because it is the one who doesn't have it.

What matters is the interface. While 15.4 screens have double channel LVDS, 30 pin interfaces, the screens on the D600s are of single channel LVDS.

I doubt that manufacturers of screens would have changes the interface just to end up with the same thing.

I don't think the headphone jack whine issue is an XP driver specific problem... I'm currently running knoppix and I've got the same problem. Exactly the same.

The "whine" is slightly less when the speakers are muted, but volume itself doesn't seem to affect the noise. When the trackpad or pointer stick is used, the noise is a little worse. Oddly, when the HD is accessed it seems to go away. Also, when moving a box around such that the video card is working, the noise is a little worse. (i've got the radeon x300 video)

Anyone else know of this issue, specifically potential fixes? I haven't yet tried disabling the sound card to see if that changes anything...

No noise from touchpad, trackstick or hard drive. Initially when I start the system there is that seashell/humming sound. If I play some music and then stop it there is this also buzzing/ringing sound that exists even after you exit the music player. I've seen a couple of posts on this on official dell forums for all types of systems. I will search around and play with the driver but really doubt there is a fix.

Also I will test it out by plugging line out port to my TV and speaker system.

thats exactly dell's classical seeshell sound. other manufactors spent years to creatate this specific dell sound, without luck. dell is for years ahead, so they can easy take a sleep

Well, I applied your registry fix in the referring thread you posted above and the humming sound is much silent.

D610

Have had the D610 since 2/18/05. Opted for M760 2GHz SGXA ATI Radeon X300, 1G Ram, 80 GB HD, 8x dvd +/- RW and 90 watt charger.

Have Logitech Z2300 sound system hooked to the headphone jack and do not notice a whine.

Regarding charger 90 watt takes 50-60 minutes to charge 6 cell battery when turned off a little over an hour when running.

The only incident I had was when I unpacked and had non recognized notice XP (touchpad/modem) which directed me to insert os reinstall disc. This done it copied start configuration 2x which resulted in problems. Tech support were very helpful and I blanked the HD and started a fresh install with XP. This worked fine (although I did not get a drivers disc with my computer so I had to download all drivers and burn to CD then install. Tech support sent me a driver disk within 3 days (you might check to make sure you recieved driver disk with computer- if not just request and they will send. I have had the D610 for over a week and am using it all the time. No problems to date and I find it a joy to use.

Double data rate 2-533 SDRAM

When I turn the volume up (subwoofer speaker system) all the way without any music I do hear a whine but it is faint.
Have not checked with headphones as I do not have any.

ok. you hear a little bit whine in your speaker system, but no noise from touchpad activity, right?
whitch display resolution is built in a XGA or SXGA? (im very wonder, why you are the first one, who dont have this touchpad issue on a d610.)

that could be a serious prob, of all d610 owners, like few latitude d600s and d800s owners have - ive a dark presentiment fo that...
a technican was today here, and he told me, that he have the same prob at his own dell lappy
(he called dell, to come here and replace the motherboard, but i cant think that helps really...)
Hooked up some head phones to my D610 and no wine. Dead silence till I played an mp3 file, then nothing but music.
