There's a new Zen Micro Color which has a color screen and has a 6 GB Micro drive I think it's coming pretty soon.

ipod's interface is much better than Dell's. And they are smaller and lighter. Granted, ipod is not perfect, it has weak battery life. I wish it was smaller and lighter.

I looked at all of the mp3 players. At first I was planning to get a Carbon. But I felt that it would not have enough space for all of the music I listen to. Additionally, I wanted to have audiobooks. It also lacked a hold (or lock) button, which was a showstopper for me.

Wow, you are truly a Dell mark *sheesh*. Let me repeat: ipod has a better interface than Dell, it is also smaller and lighter. BTW, I have no interest in online music stores.

OK, now I get it, you are the Dell Dude. Get over the fact that Dell fired you for doing drugs....

But seriously, have you ever thought that not everyone here is in college??? I am not "defending" my purchase. In case you did not know, I started a thread about mp3 players, since I was in the market for one.

The carbon actually has a simple locking mechanism, similar to how you would lock a cell phone. But since it doesn't enough have storage space for you, I guess the locking feature is hardly important.

Someone sent me a private message that Rio may be releasing the Chroma this fall/winter, a 20GB player that looks to have the same size of the carbon. Now that would be pretty slick. Hopefully they improve the interface and include a hold button this time.

Ok let me clarify this. The Carbon a lock control in its menus that let's you control which buttons are locked in its "lock mode". Then, to engage "lock mode", simply press menu and center buttons at the same time, like a cell phone. So, in a sense, the Carbon has more advanced hold functions than all other players, since you can actually control which buttons are locked.

BTW, I've been waiting for the Chroma ever since I returned my 4G iPod last fall. I was hoping it would be released around christmas, but here we are...

Yeah and they are way too big.

Yes, they do add some distortion but I like the isolation effect. I really notice it when listening to audio books on the train to work. I am listening to Da Vinci Code, fascinating fiction...

The Rio rep that replied to my email, recommended that player to me. Unfortunately I didn't see it at compusa.

FACT: Ipods control OVER 80% of the market share. There is absolutely zero, none, NIL as in NO chance that another mp3 player will grab a share of this market away from Applein the forseeable future. Ipod as a name and brand is synonymous with mp3 players now. It makes sense to own an Ipod if for no other reason than most any third party product worth a damn being made is being made to work with the Ipod. Moreover, it is a very intuitive interface and is easy to use and load. Other players may have better battery life, features, etc, but this is about market share and long term support. Apple for once marketed itself correctly and has a product which is a superior product on the whole compared to their competitiors.

I got some Phillips earbud headphones from Target for $20. They get super loud and don't distort. I can't even listen to them all the up without my ears ringing later. Good thing about the phillips earbuds is that they look like regular ipod earphones.

I blew my original ipod ear buds after 1 week, was really dissapointed.

I don't know about the 'normal' DJ's vs. the iPods, but the Pocket DJ is essentially the same size as the iPod Mini (3.5x2.1x0.5 for the Dell vs. 3.6x2.0x0.5 for the Apple). I don't understand the 'intuitive' commments on user interfaces, either. I've used both the iPod and the DJ and a few other MP3 players. You don't need a degree in rocket science to figure any of them out. Use any of the players for about 5 minutes and they are all 'intuitive'.

I agree with the assestion that iPod's market share is a huge benefit. It pretty much guarantees that any accessories will be made for the iPod. If you plan to do anything other than just listen to music directly via the player (ex: integrate with your car or home stereo), buy the iPod. You'll stand a much, much better chance of finding cool accessories that'll make it work.

hmmm really?

Pocket DJ 3.5x2.1x0.5 inches
iPod Mini 3.6x2.0x0.5 inches

Yep the iPod Mini is certainly much smaller I will give you the fact that it is lighter

iPod Mini 3.6 ounces
Pocket DJ 4.4 ounces

if you cant handle the extra 0.8 ounces then you better get to a doctor and sign up at a gym to work out ASAP. But from my point of view, paying $50 less for an extra GB of space along with better battery life is worth it.

So you spent $299 on a 20 GB player when you could of spent $299 on a 30 GB player? Ohh thats right I forgot, you couldn't handle the extra 1.2 ounces the DJ weighs .

Good, I dont care about online music stores either, but if I ever wanted to buy music I know Im not sucked into the iPod monopoly. As for the Dell Interface, it is the most simplisitic interface, very easy to use. Being a person who has actually used both I can say that the Dell DJ bitchslaps the iPod to death in this category.

ah ha! So being a student is only important if your buying an iPod and not a DJ, I love hypocrites!

Yep! Looks like you'll be able to listen to your $299 20 Gig MP3 player because your arms couldnt support the extra 1.2 ounces that a $299 DJ with 30 GBs gives you (leaving out the interface because that is a pure opinion)

As for me, I'll just take the extra $50 I saved and buy a few CDs to fill up the extra GB of space I got while listening to that music for an additional two hours over the iPod Mini users

Nice try

Yikes... Calm down... Its only an MP3 player for gods sake. I don't think Humilliating failure quite covers someone failing to defend a bit of plastic?

And the ipod does look better - but owning neither one (yet) I'm not gonna get involved in this little spat.

I got my 40GB 4th Gen Ipod for $230. Thats really the only reason why I bought it because I initially hated ipods just because they ran the market and they didn't even look cool. After owning one, I'm happy I bought it, but I still wouldn't pay anywhere near retail price for it. I've only seen pics of the Dell DJ, but it looks way cooler than the Ipod. But like someone said before, there will always be new accessories for the Ipod, can't say that about any other player.

Ipods are OK to me. Nice interface but the battery life is pretty poor. I have to recharge it about every other day which is annoying. But its nice to be able to carry alot of music and audiobooks in my pocket. So I will probably keep it. I have about 10 days left to get a refund from compusa.

I really like ipods, but they aren't perfect. While that sounds obvious, I think it would be news to a lot of ipod fanatics. On the other side, they have a lot to offer - which would be news to a lot of the ipod-haters out there. There is no perfect mp3 player; they all have character, and different features and drawbacks that will apeal to different people.

For the informed shopper now, it shouldn't be 'should i get an ipod' and then if the answer is no, look elsewhere. You should think about what you want in the player, look around at what the options/features each player has, narrow it down, go try out the ones you like, and then buy. The ipod should just be another player among the rest; because while they are great, other companies have seen what works with the ipod and emulated it, and often improved on it. Of course ipod actually copied a lot of its stuff from other people, too, but whatever. For some people, the ipod is the best mp3 player for them. And even those who buy it because it's 'cool', that's fine too, because I see that as a feature like anything else. For others, there are a lot of mp3 players out there. I think ipod fanboyism is ridiculous, and ipod bashing is even stupider.
I personally liked everything about the ipod except for the sound quality. For me, the rio karma worked best.

You never mentioned which iPod you owned, 1G, 2G, 3G, mini, U2 iPod, 5 GB model, 10 GB, 15, 20, 40, photo 40, photo 60. I just assumed you got a 4G 20 GB. You do know the different generations don't you, I also was making a comparison of the DJ and the iPod, just like you said! How ironic!
