I just ordered the Compaq R3000z for $1229 free shipping and a $30 mail in rebate. Here are my specs:

15.4in screen w/brightview
Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0Ghz
512mb of ram (256x2)
60 gb hd 4200 rpm
64mb GeForce 4 440 +1394
8x DVD+-RW/CD-RW
802.11b/g wireless
12 cell battery

Does anyone else have the R3000z series laptop? If so, what do you think of it so far? How are the speakers? Would you recommend any upgrades? Thanks.

Good Choice... I have had mine for around 6 months now and have had no problems with it. The speakers are among the best among the laptops. People say that the HP's Harman Kardons are better...but these speakers are pretty good. However if the volume is turned too high it might have some distortions.

Your specs are pretty good for everyday usage..I guess you could upgrade the RAM to 1gig. Maybe even get a 5400 or 7200rpm harddrives which will improve performance a lot.

The ultimate upgrade from Hp would be an improved graphics card..atleast for the next generation R3000Zs.

Enjoy

Hi

Check out the comments on the thread I started about the R3000T I ended up buying the 3000Z after the feedback I go. PC magazine on line has also recently reviewed this laptop with glowing reviews.

I bought an R3000Z and have been very happy with it. It was the first computer that I actually called my own. I had a friend that is a computer tech for D-Link, take a look at it and said that the hardware that Compaq used is very good. This was a real surprise since he doesnt not like to use computers that he himself doesnt build. I am very glad I decided to go with the R3000Z.

Congradulations on the laptop, my 3000Z just arrived on monday of this week, and I love it, its a bit heavy, but other than that, I love the speed, good screen, excellent feel on the keyboard.

I am curious to know what you carry it around in--i bought the timbuktu messanger bag with laptop compartment, and i really like it.

Again, congrats!

Good buy mctriple. I went ahead and ordered one today, too. I'm still not set on this notebook, but with all the rebates, I just got it before it expired.

XP Pro
64MB GeForce 440
256MB
12 cell battery
8x dvd
80GB 5400RPM
15.4 WXGA
and Bluetooth

All for $840 after rebates.

very nice!

yeah a good deal like this was too hard to pass up. i figure.. if i change my mind, i can make some $$ with it on ebay. those people are paying damned near this price for a p3 850ghz, 10gb hd, 128mb ram.. it's ridiculous.

the only thing that i don't like is the gef4 440 go.. even the upgrade.. i'll see how it performs first, though.
