Need Advice On New Laptop

Thread Starter
This is my first post, so I am asking a basic question. I am interested in purchasing a new laptop computer and would like some recommendations. Here's my criteria:

1. For use on business trips, Word, Internet, Email, etc. (no games or high end software)
2. Fairly light weight and thin
3. Screen size around 15"
4. 512 meg RAM
5. As fast as I can get for under $1500
6. Dependable history
7. Good battery life.

I am a little partial to Dell, but am open to other manufacturers.

Thanks for your recommendations.

I just configured a Dell 600m notebook (14.1" screen, 5.5lbs) as such for $1449 after the Dell $600 off coupon that is going on right now for a limited time:

Dell 600m
1.8 Pentium M Processor
512mb RAM (1 stick, so easily upgradeable)
14.1 SXGA screen (nice res)
60gb HDD (doesn't tell me the speed, but I am guessing it is 5400 as I think I remember someone in the Dell forums saying so)
CD-RW/DVD drive
64mb of VRAM
3yr Warranty (at home service including nights and weekends).

1449 after coupon (shipping is free).

By the way, if you want to save a little more $ go with less warranty especially if you only plan on keeping it a couple of years. The "nights and weekends" thing is only with 3 and 4 year warranties, but isn't that great of a bonus.

Depending on what retailers you use, you might want to look at an Asus M3Np...you can get it spec'd out as follows:

1.6-1.8 P-M Dothan
512mb RAM (1 stick)
14.1 SXGA+
60gb 5400 rpm hard drive
CDRW/DVD drive
integrated b/g wifi

all for about $1500...

...but that Dell coupon is very tempting, plus if you want the warranty then I would choose that, plus free shipping is nice...just trying to give you another option to consider, but I don't think you'll be able to beat that Dell.

If weight isnt an issue, and you get one of those nifty nard-shell cases from Imnotallowedtopostthisinformation.com, then check out my singature specs, and I can PM or email you covertly where I purchased mine. I havent taken delivery of it yet, but its going to be benchmarked and reviewed on --censored--.com, by the owner, whom Ive spoken to at length about this machine.
