Acer Ferrari vs Sager 5690

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
ok I currently have a Sager 5690 and thinking about upgrading to something "lighter, equal or higher performance of my current 5690, and will be more for audio/video design, composing, internet but not lacking the D3 and HL2 capability".

I been look at several of the reviews of the Acer Ferrai and it sounds really nice which is why I am looking into it even more but my question is... since due to the price for the AMD 64, 3400 model is kind of high...
is there anything else similar to the Ferrari 3400 but for a bit less i price?
Perhaps someone has some nice links that has the best price or "better" price, compared to buying from ACER?

Or should I look at another SAGER? Fujitsu?
Thanks!

May you explain why besides just a strait answer that may not neccessarily back up your answer and comply to my questions? Because yes it may seem great but your answer is without thought on the price....

The ferarri is a very nice laptop, it's around 6.5 lbs and very similar to my TM800 LCI same basic body, it's one of the sexier thiner and lighter A64 Mobiles I have seen though I think that's starting to change, and it comes with a good MR9700 128 meg card at a reasonable price.

The TM8100 is a new gen PCIe Sonoma platform pentium powerd laptop with MRX700 graphics that pack about 2~2.5 times the power of the old MR9700, and the prices are VERY nice, $1900ish for the 1.86 ghz/512 meg/100 gig/15.4 1680x1050/8X DL DVD burner version, and $2250ish for the 2.0 ghz/1 GB version.

Why do you say that? Except for the Mobility Radeon X700 there's nothing special about the Travelmate 8100 in my opinion. I'd rather get the Acer Ferrari 3400 or hold out untill the new one ships in april/may with Mobility Radeon X700 graphics as well...

@snorre
Hold out for which machine to come with the X700....The 8100 or the Ferrari?

There's a new Ferrari coming that will also feature Mobility Radeon X700 128MB graphics, I'd hold out for that if I were you...

Snorre, is there any chance of AMD notebooks getting lighter? The ferrari is half a pound heavier than the 810X, and I haven't seen any other Athlon64 notebook that was near as light as the ferrari. Is there any idea of how heavy Turion notebooks are going to be?
Portability is the big issue for me, along with battery life. That has unfortunately pushed me towards Intel processors...

Some of the Announced A64 laptops with PCI-E that have shown up in the forums with X700 graphics like the Armina solution with ultra low power A64 chips that may or may not be Turion are down into the high 5 lb/low 6 lb range, and look very nice actualy, it just depends on how long you want to wait for something to show up, thats why I said I figured that the Acer's status as one of the thinest and lighest A64 laptops was about to change.

My main concern about the Sonoma chipsets is that they seem to lose more battery life than they gain power, so to speak. This is one reason I'd like to see what the ULV AMD chips can do. Maybe they can have battery lives that rival (or exceed) centrino notebooks'?
