lol... 7200 rpm drives don't make shit with me. Cache levels does

Cache? Most 7200RPM drives are 8MB these days, including Hitachi's notebook drives. The upgrade to 16MB isn't that substantial, there are other things in those drives that speed them up. And anyhow I don't see 16MB drives coming to notebooks any time soon.

Why don't you grab a 60G 7200RPM drive now and put your 80G on external?

cache isn't as important as NCQ, when are they going to put those in lappy drives?

also if you go USB for any HDD it is limited to a max data transfer rate of 13MB/s, that is horribly pitiful if you are transfering lots of data back and forth (the #1 reason why you have an external drive is to copy lots of data back and forth)

They've already been out for a bit. Toshiba's latest drive series has a 16MB cache. (My Compal CL56 came with one) According to some comparison reviews, a 16MB doesn't seem to do too much for the drive...or maybe I'm reading the wrong thing into those reviews...

Ooops, never mind, didn't see that 7200rpm drives thingy...

Welcome to the world of compromise

I guess it comes down to how bad you want a 7200RPM drive and how much it will interfere with your usage pattern. For backup/restore and extra storage I don't find it to be too bad... just don't try running large programs from it or stuff that will hit the disk frequently. It's slow, yeah, but not unbareable; and of course, this is totally subjective.

To answer your question . . . The Seagate Momentus 100 gb @ 7200 rpm will be available at Best Buy in the early part of May 2005, if not sooner.

I make that statement based on my discussions with the Best Buy sales staff and my e-mails with Seagate's Disc Presales Dept.

I'm waiting, as well.
