Help creating a back up image

I'm trying to learn how to back up my hard drive and needs some advise. I understand the concept of creating a drive image but can you just make a copy of a partition? I'd like to back up my 80 gig hdd but I know I can't fit the whole image on a dvd. Please someone, anyone give me some insight on this. Ghost is horibly expensive does anyone know any good free versions?

Thanks

What program are you gonna use? Norton Ghost? If so... yes you can select just the partition you want to backup or copy. A nice free alternative is http://www.partimage.org.

I don't understand why you think Norton Ghost is so horribly expensive. The latest retail packaged version (Ghost 9.0) starts around $50. The OEM version starts at about $28 from etailers. If you can afford a $2K lappy, a $30 piece of software shouldn't make you flinch...especially for something as important as backing up...

Try Acronis TrueImage Deluxe, is free

Big guy went to the site and it starts at 79.99

I also recommend True Image. It gives you more options than Ghost and has a better feel to it. Download it here: http://www.acronis.com/files/trueimage8.0_s_en.exe

You won't be able to copy some files because:

1. they might be in use by the operating system which is locking them
2. Some files are on mbr and can't be seen in the standard windows explorer

You can perform compression. True image and ghost give you that option.

Well since you've already pegged me as some rich guy perhaps I'll let you explain to my wife why after I spent all this money on a laptop that I need Ghost too. I wasn't aware of the OEM version and just because I bought a 2k laptop doesn't make me rich so f*** off and mind you're own business!! FYI the copy I saw was $60 and that's more than I wanted to spend.

this question didn't get answered in another thread, so i'll try it here...

would it be possible to ghost apps and files, do a fresh install of the os, and then restore previously installed apps...i'm sure it would require some extra work, like registry entries to merge or something, but i'd sure like to know...it'd be a heck of a lot easier than reinstalling the countless programs i have, most of which i would have to download again (open office, hl2, cs:s, etc...)

I'm currently backing up my HDD using Ghost 9.0 I'll let you know how it goes. I tried a program called True image and something went horribly wrong, I couldn't boot any more so i had to re-install everything.

Through work, I've been a long time Ghost user. But, for home use I recommend TeraByte Unlimited's Image for Windows. For about $27 you get a Windows and DOS version of their program. I've recommended this to other friends that didn't want to spend as much money as Symantec usually wants for Ghost.

TeraByte Unlimited

Also, I've been able to build Windows recovery CDs using Bart's PE, and Image for Windows works just fine as plugin in that too (so does Ghost, prior to version 9 for that matter). Bart's PE Builder

Just a suggestion.

What you need to do is install your OS and all apps. Get you computer set up how you like it. Then (using image software) make an image of your C: drive (assuming your system, boot, and software files are on your c: drive). You can store this image on another partition (risky if the hd fails), another hd, or cd/dvd.
Hope that helps.

Edit:
I just read you question again. What you are wanting to do is almost impossible. At least it would be more work than backing up data files and reinstalling everything.

Actually, there is a piece of software that will do exactly what was asked. It's called WinINSTALL LE 2003. Check out the link, I believe it's still a free download.

Yes, perhaps you need to explain to your wife why you need to purchase software period. From your later post it seems you actually found what I said useful, or did you get a warez copy of Norton ghost 9.0 you are using now? Perhaps next time you need to spend less on the hardware so you can have money left over for some cheap software.

That creates .msi installation packages. It has nothing to do with what he is asking about.

yeah, i figured that it would be a tremendous pain in the arse. i was just wondering if it could be done
reinstalling os and apps really isn't all that bad. i have all my installers and cfg's on my external...i usually lose a few loose files here and there (skins, etc) that i forget to backup, but nothing all that bad...
