UWXGA and internet browsing.

If you own a dell laptop with WUXGA screen (like the i9200) you cannot go past using Firefox as your internet browser.

Besides the already well-known benefits of this FANTASTIC browser, it allows you to increase fonts on ALL websites (unlike IE).

No more strained eyes for us WUXGA owners

Get it here !!! http://start.mozilla.org/firefox/

Totally agree. I use IE only for windows update (and at sites where firefox is not compatible)
lol IE 7 is gonna own firefox. im using firefox as well, but if IE is gonna fix all the loopholes ill switch back.

and with the tabbing feature... maybe... if not, screw IE!

Firefox is just SO much faster. That hasn't been listed as a priority for IE 7.0

Horizontal scroll and drop down menu scroll in Firefox??

It seems that firefox can not use wheel mouse or touch pad horizontal scroll for a oversized webpage & drop down menu scroll function. Am I right?
Nope. I use a wheel and my touchpad has a horizontal scrolling and it works in Firefox
post #9 of 21
I must do something wrong that horizontal scrolling is not working in firefox on my 9200. But It works in IE.

ok, with IE i just checked the "ignore web page font sizes" or something like that, then you go and increase the font sizes under "view"... that does what your saying.

i tried firefox, but i just didn't see any major benifits it offered over IE. IE "looks" better than firefox in my opion, firefox actually seemed slower when i used it, and i cant make the fonts bigger without making them looks abnormally large on some sites. plus, i like the google tool bar, it does a lot more than the search feature in firefox and i can control it better, plus it has a pop-up blocker (this blocker combined w/ the one IE has built in and the one norton has running ensures that i NEVER get popups...even if i want to). and the general font sizes in firefox are smaller than in IE (reffering to the menus, like File, Edit, etc). unless i find out about some major benifits firefox offers over IE then i'm staying w/ IE, it seems to have more features than firefox despite everyone saying otherwise (has history, favorites-> in menu and side display form, and a bunch of other ones that propably arn't in firefox).

also, i hear about IE having "holes" in it that firefox doesn't, can someone explain this better to me, and posible why firefox is so much better than IE. If firefox IS better than cool, i'll switch, but as of now i have no reason to. i want to get firefox working to my likeing, but everytime i try i just say "screw it, this is a pain in the @$$ and IE has never given me problems". basically i'm asking what firefox has over IE. thanks

a single line of code can crash IE. It's fairly unstable. But most people are used to it and such so for them it's easier to keep it. Also i love the tabs in Firefox. If you have a bunch of sites you always visit... open them up in different tabs then go to Tools - Options - (general tab) and set your current home page as: Use Current Page
then everytime you open firefox all those sites will open in the tabs and you can browse em all instantly

Firefox is highly customisable. You can make it look like whatever you want. Also, you can increase the default pipe sizes for faster browsing. And there's TAB browsing ... multiple pages homepage ... you can open/close tabs by clicking on the mouse wheel ... the list goes on.

IE uses ActiveX which is the main root for spyware problems ... etc ...

To me, the TAB browsing feature of firefox alone is worth the switch ... hope this helps ...

Some questions...
1)can someone using a uxga display take a screenshot of their fonts and colors settings box? (tools>options>fonts&colors) cause i cant get mine to work right for me, and i think i screwed them up in the begining... i need help with this

2)how do you increase the pipe sizes for faster browsing? and how do you enable/do tab browsing?

thanks, i'm closer to getting firefix to work right for me, i'm posting this in it right now.

Speed up Firefox: http://forevergeek.com/open_source/m...fox_faster.php

Definitely recommend checking out Firefox if you haven't already. The Extensions support means you can really customize it to suit your needs. They just released a new version so if the server is slow or gives you errors, try back in a day or two.

What loopholes are you talking about in IE? If you mean all the spyware that can get onto your system... well, do what i do, and don't click YES when a site asks you if you want to install the stuff. And if you don't visit questionable sites that could use ActiveX, then you won't have a problem with that.

And if you mean by security holes... again, stop visiting questionable sites, and you shouldn't have a problem. In all my years, i never got spyware on my system. I just ran my one box that was using IE for 2 years before i switched to Firefox about 3 months ago on that system, and ran MS Antispyware for the first time... and found absolutely nothing.

But i use Firefox... i just like the tab, ability to open pages by clicking the scrollwheel onto a new tab, increasing/decreasing fonts by holding CTRL + or -, ease and number of plugins, and stability a lot more.

Thanks!

i9200 user, thanks for the tip about the Avant browser ... I like it very much... tried the Firefox but somehow couldn't get used to it... prefer Avant to either IE or Firefox for now.
not really important, but you can increase/decrease fontsize with ctrl+/- scrollwheel in internet explorer, aswell as firefox.

now ie doesnt have the ctrl +/-, but thats like..not really usefull if you have the scrollwheel.

Regarding the tab feature in Firefox, CrazyBrowser is an IE frontend that offers the exact same feature...
