Question about mp3 player bit rates

Thread Starter
Looking to get a RCA Lyra 1072 but it says the supported bit rates for .wma files are from 48 to 160 kbps and the stuff I've got saved on my hard drive from cd's are showing a bit rate of 1411 after being copied from nero. Is that two high for this player. Guess I'm more wanting to know what's the different between the higher and lower kbps bit rates for these players.

those really high bit-rate numbers are often VBR's that are misinterpreted by crappy software... or they are wma's or some other oddly-encoded mp3 file.

Some portable players have been known to choke on high bit-rate-encoded files and VBR-encoded ones (Variable Bit Rate, btw).

That's why it's best to encode at 160 or 128 - not only can you fit more songs, but it's likely the player/headphones won't give the difference audibly.

Of course, it could be something else completely, but this is my first guess.
