Laptop Advice

Im going to college this fall and therefore have to give up my desktop modification passions. Im kinda new in the laptop scene, Shifting from a High Performance PC to a laptop will be hard for me, but im sure once I get hold of a kick ass laptop so much for desktops.

Im looking for something like a AMD 64 3200+ , 7200RPM Hard Drive, 1GB RAM, Build in Wifi/Bluetooth and ofcoarse a kick ass video card, The Radeon 9700 Mobility rings a bell to me.

The Acer Ferarri 3400LMI ( 3000+ ) looks good, But will ofcoarse require a HD upgrade to 7200RPM and memory upgrade to 1GB and it'll , this adds like $350 to the price, which takes the total to somewhere around $2250.

Im willing to carry extra batteries or even those External batteries, 3 hours of battery time is more than enough for me.

The laptop shouldnt weight more than like 8lbs, 15.4" Display and the more the USB ports, The better.

Last but not the least my budget which is a max of around $2500. Between 1500-2000 would be GREAT!

Any recommendations would be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Since you're not going til this Fall, I'd recommend you wait and see if Acer release a new Ferrari model.

Considering that their new Travelmates are available with 1GB RAM there may be some light at the end of the tunnel for that at least.

Any new mobile AMD offerings by then will likely be based on the new AMD64 Turion processor (there is a thread that is going around about it) which will, from what I understand, be both better on performance and battery life.

Then there is the GPU to consider. The 9700 right now is about a year old. I'm pretty sure that if they come out with a new Ferrari model it will feature a pci-express GPU that is worlds better than the 9700 and may have an outside chance of being upgradeable.

In any event, since it is an Acer, you'll probably still have to upgrade the HD

Just some stuff to consider.

Not sure about other laptops that meet your specs, but as far as updates on new Acer models, this is the best place (or when they make an Acer brand specific part of the forum, then there). You pretty much hear it first on notebookforums (unless you scour the net for stuff). Though I am sure within 10 minutes of when there is a new Ferrari model in the works, snorre (a user here who is obsessed with them, literally) will let us all know about it
