I had a hard drive get messed up after letting it go through an X-ray machine. It immediately had lots of problems reading the drive, and additional sectors kept going bad. A reformat of the drive made it useable again. I later talked to an X-ray machine operator when there was no line. He said that the machines increase power as required to see "through" whatever's in there. I also had a lead-lined bag bag with some film in it. He told me to put some coins in the bag and he ran it back through. It automatically increased the power and I could tell which way the heads were facing on the coins. He said that if you have anything that's dense to X-rays in a suitcase, everything in the case will be exposed to heavy radiation.
