I think Celeron M would be sufficient for me, but I don't have much idea about the other specs.....This is my very first laptop, so I don't want to buy something which is not of much use to me... Also, there is M35X-S161 available for 799 $, so could you guys please suggest me as to what should I do? If you know any better deals than this, or any other better laptop, can you please suggest it to me. I can wait for a while before buying a laptop, so if you know any good deals coming up, I can wait....

My friend just went to local Circuit City and grabed a package deal Toshiba notebook with pretty much similar spec as what you posted (can't remember her model). Total after tax was $1,020, after mail-in rebate will cost $599. The system comes w/ Belkin G wireless router and a Canon printer. Talking about SUPER DEAL.

BTW, her system is slightly better than M35-S111. It is 1.3 Celeron M w/1MB cache, 512MB Ram and 60GB HDD. This processor chipset is basically similar to Centrino 1.3 Banias w/o trottling capability, resulting to higher battery consumption and lower processor performance.

I just finished reconfiguring her system and set up her wireless connection. I had pretty good impression. It is quite responsive. It will handle basic applications such as Internet, e-mail, MS Office and light photo and video editing very well. It has pretty good sound system (True surround capability). Built well overall.

Only negative things are lound fan noise and pretty funny looking standby/hibernation (depending on how you set it to work) bezel thingy. I am thinking about installing RM clock to see if this program will work with Celeron M chipset and it will help enhancing battey life and reducing fan speed (by reducing clockspeed, thus less heat).

The bottom line is that if you have limited budget and do not plan to use it for heavy 3D programs, it is definitely worth buying. I would go no less than 1MB cache on die level2 chipset and 512MB ram. It will make quite a bit of different running XP based applications.

I hope that this helps.

Hi b2s, thanks a lot for ur help... can you tell me which model did ur friend buy.. Is it a M35X-S161..? because it comes with 512 MB Ram and 60 GB hard disk... but the cache is still 512 kb... I think Celeron M now comes only with 1 MB cache, so they must have made a printing mistake... And if ur friend bought a M35X-S161, its a GR8 deal at that price, as its available for 779$ on circuit city at the moment, and tht too without any router or printer.....

I posted some info on the M35X-S149 - I'm real happy with it from a price and quality standpoint and have reviewed it on this board. $549 on sale. For anyone who is just going to surf, rip, watch DVDs and do MS Office stuff this is a great machine. It's never going to play high end games or do heavy grahics or large scale builds but for the college student who just needs wireless connectivity and such. Can't beat it.

Yes it is M35X-S161. It is actually has 1MB cache as confirmed by SiSandra Bench Program. I believe that the older version might have 512MB. All newer ones got 1MB as advertised by Circuit City and Toshiba web-link themselves.

One last thing worth mentioning is the battery, which my friend just finished testing it. One word --Aweful-- It only lasts ~75-90 minutes. Well, this very model comes with 4 cell and you can only get to 3.5 hours by getting high cap battery from Toshiba at ~$150.

Ask your self what you are planning to do carefully as it may end up better off for you getting other model or other brand.

I believed you can still go check out this very deal as my friend just got at local Circuit City store. The deal does not offered via Circuit City website, which is kinda strange.

Good luck shop around.

K R M,
Here's the post where I talked about the M35x-S149.

http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=55472

The post says $599 but I actually got it for $549 during a one day only sale and bought an additional 256mb for $59 to bring it to a total of 512mb. It was a one day only Sunday sale the same day I ran my first marathon. If the deal wasn't so darn good, and if the sale circular hadn't come out on that same day I wouldn't have bothered crawling down there cause I was hurtin. I'm glad I did though. My daughter is still thrilled and so am I.

I have found it on sale again since I bought it but usually its on sale for $599 - $699. The full retail is usually around $1000 or so. You gotta put the other 256mb in though - since its using integrated video ram. One of the things I really like about it is the WXGA - nice to get a little more screen real estate for that kind of money.

Hope this helps....

I own this laptop, Toshiba Satellite M35X-S111. I purchased it at Best Buy for 849 but with mail-in rebates it cost 499. It is an excellent computer for that price. You should plan to upgrade the memory as 256 is really not enough. I bought a kingston 512 chip for about 90 dollars from Office Max and put it in and the performance improved dramatically. The battery lasts about 2 hours and 45 minutes using the standard power saving settings. It is plenty fast for basic computing and I have no complaints using it with photoshop and fireworks.

Toshiba sets up windows and software in the configuration they prefer. They then made a Norton Ghost disk image and saved it to a bootable DVD for restoration purposes. This severely irritated me since I do not like having all the crap they put on the computer. I wound up having to obtain a copy of windows xp home so that I could install it my way.

I would buy this laptop again.
