Returned my 9200 got the A270 Sony

I bought a refurbished 9200 with everything I wanted: 2.1 processer, meg of memory, 7200rpm 60 gig hd ,wireless, bluetooth, WUXGA,thinking that Dell would have taken a hard look at the display had it been returned for that reason. Well, guess what model display I received but the much despised W5409. No doubt in my mind why the original buyer returned it. Horrible display: it had this sparkily, hollographic sandy texture going on combined with a dim/murkiness. I liked the machine otherwise but could not live with the screen. Back it went. Got on Sonystyle.com, found a A270 manufactured Jan 2005 for $379 less than building it on the site. Went with the 6-8 ground shipping BUT GOT IT THE NEXT DAY, people! Reaction between the two? Dell was a Chevy/Ford compared to the Sony's BMW/Lexas. I wound up spending a couple of hundred more, but I am convinced I got a much better machine. My advise for those of you wanting a 17" 1920 x 1600 notebook is too look at a A270 before you play Russian Roulette with Dell's 9200. I haven't seen a really good 9200 screen but as a graphic artist who is a little particular about displays I can tell you that the Sony's is FREAKING BEAUTIFUL!

Glad you got what you wanted. BTW, my M60 is a skid steer loader -- a Case 450, to be precise. And it's spelled LexUs.

My tablet has a sparkly screen, it doesn't matter with me. Whats up with the sparkly screen issue, it actually makes the pictures MORE clear then before.

Haha! I just went through my own 9200 return horror story!
(Have not received the latest credit card statement yet, so it may not be over yet).
And yes, I guess I will never buy Dell again, and I'm not happy about it.
SONY!

Hey Kakarot, Dells are hardly bulletproof. My office has used Dells for years and I can tell you that our Dells have had their share of problems maybe more than their share, both hardware and flukey software issues. I would rate their onsite service as average at best once you can get ahold of them. A recent issue of Computer Reports rates Sony above Dell in reliability and Apple above Sony.

I'm not saying anything to insult sony but for most ppl out there who don't have that much money, dell laptops are enough to meet their needs...

One life lesson I have had to learn and relearn is to never be loyal to a particular brand, be it political party or laptop. To do so makes you less than objective. I tried Dell, and found as far their 9200 with the W5409 screen goes they were trying to sell me an inferior product. I wish Dell was worthy of your kind of loyalty, life would certainly be easier, but I don't think that they are. I have had 3 positive experience with Dell and one very negative one. A 75% grade isn't great. As for Caprice vs BMWs..all depends whether you want to have relations in the back seat or strafe down a winding mountain road.

Sony screen is superior by far, but in terms quality/price Dell is unbeatable;

Bayerischen Motoren Werke forever.

Well they screwed the pooch with the 9200 uxga screen. I hope Dell gets it's act together with the 9300.

Its like getting a Cheap car like Kia vs getting an expensive car like BMW or Ferrari...

If you can get near the same items interior, leather, GPS, etc, then whats the point of getting a car thats 2x - 4x the price of hte car with the same items...

Same goes for here, dell is a good comptuer company and their products are cheap... more or less... sony may have better items but compared to price, the dell beats sony easy.

Dell has suspended the uxga screen as of the date of this posting but you can still find it on refurbs

Kakarot, sounds like you don't know too much about cars or computers but you haven't let that stop you from having strong opinions.

not really.. My point was if you can get something for cheap, why would you not take that chance but instead go for something more expensive.

Sony does not make better laptops than Dell period. IBM makes better laptops. Not Sony. Sony is an average manufacturer that charges more for their name. If people have patience they get what they want from Dell...
