Saying Farewell...

Thread Starter
One of those worst events that can ever happen in one's life has happened to me. My house was burglarized and my beloved 9860 was one of the items the thief took along with my other Dell laptop, Optoma projector, digital camera, camcorder etc...
As all of you know, the 9860 is a hell of a lot of money to invest in and I have enjoy every single moment I had with it since December.
Sad thing is with all the rave you guys made on how good Half Life 2 looked on the notebook, I got a copy of it installed but never even have the chance to start playing it.
Not sure when or if ever I will save enough for another notebook but I just want to drop by to say farewell and thank you for all the info I got from this forum and the people that had helped out with answers and info.
Maybe down the line, I will have the good fortune to return here and we shall meet again.
Until then, have fun with your 9860 and your Sager in general. I loved mine.

Signing off........

did you own the home and have home owners insurance or renter insurance? that would cover your replacement costs since the thing didnt even have time for depreciation

Man, that really sucks! I'm hoping that you did have some type of rental or home insurance that Drowis mentioned. Good luck to you and I hope things work out! BTW, do you have any idea who might have broke in to your house?

Did you buy it with a Credit Card? They will Cover Theft/Damage for a time period after the purchase.

I too have been broken into and it sucks even when you have insurance.

important steps to take

I work in law enforcement and wanted to make sure you do a few things:

1. make sure law enforcement has the serial #'s for the computer and any other items that were taken. Most police departments do occaisional checks of pawn shops and having the serail #'s helps. If you don't have the #'s yourself, check with your re-seller, they likely have a record of it.

2. Check any local pawnshops yourself. If it was stolen it was very likely re-sold. You'd be suprised how many people pawn stuff just down the street from where they stole it. (if it wasn't for stupid people, I wouldn't have a job )

3. Like others have said, check any insurance you have.

4. This is small comfort, but at least you can usually deduct ant theft losses from your taxes. Check with a tax professional for the details.

Good Luck!

any idea what software that guy used? it says that it started recording when it registered motion. that feature, along with being able to auto-email the shots are what's important.
You could do it with Max/msp easily but that might be overkill since you can probably find a program that only does the 2 things that you are looking for (auto emial and motion detect)
It said he wrote the program himself. That guy should patent and sell it though, that's a really great idea.

It'd be better to get video and find a way of uploading it to a remote server in real time - kinda like the idea from that movie Meet the Parents. You'd be much more likely to get a usable shot.

Did you see the pics? They were usable. And you don't need 25+ frames per second, that's just going to kill your bandwidth.... not to mention webcams that do vidoes are very poor quality.

all you really need is a reasonably good picture of the person's face and they'rthey're done

Heh, that show is great. Especially the people that think that they could never be robbed... I once heard of this thing that someone did with a microwave by putting a motion sensor outside their house and a phonograph-like bell on the radiation emitter or whatever it's called in the microwave, then pointing the bell outside. When the thief triggers the sensor, ZAP! Bye bye corneas.
