ok, i've got about $100k for $125/yr. nough said...get a different insurance coverage...i've dealt with several and there has always been limitations on computer equipment even if you have separate rider policy for it...it's b/c the technology changes too fast.

yes it would be suspicious if you had more than 2/yr, but depending on which insurance company you go with, any claim, even if the company does not pay out b/c it cost more than your deductible, counts as points. note that i wrote claim. some companies are very strict, but they also are very good, there is no standard. this also includes if you werent at fault.

I'm not incorrect, it happens all the time, I know what the law says and I never once said this was legal, but it happens. They probably do not put an actual formal mark on your record, but trust me, it's there. I personally know of 3 different "major insurance companies" that do that. And then when you do file a claim that may not have caused a rate increase initially, when combined with the "mark" would cause a rate increase!

I also "unpersonally" know many others do also, there have been countless stories on this (dateline, msnbc investigates, etc.).

Don't tell me I'm incorrect when I know for a fact it happens. Just because you have never seen it happen, does not mean it doesn't.

And your rates will go up if you file 1-2 claims per year, for consecutive numbers of years, and you will probably be dropped. So you're saying that you can file 1-2 claims per year and not have any marks on your account such as a rate increse? I don't think so,...insurance companies don't stay in business by doing this.

Mine increases the rate after 1 claim. Of course it is called a discount since I have no claims so technically my rate isn't increasing, I just lose my discount. It all comes out the same in the wash though.

Notebooks are subject to much more abuse than a desktop due to their portable nature. I have spent anywhere from 3 - 5 K for a loaded laptop over the past 10 years. With this kind of investment the small percentage increase for an extended warranty / complete care is money well spent in my opinion. It also makes selling the laptop much easier since the buyer knows the laptop is still covered (if you sell it before the warranty runs out). I tyically upgrade every 2 years (or less) and I always get at least a 3 years warranty. Often times you can find cash rebates on the exteneded warranties which make then an even better deal.

do you guys go for the gold svc? i was told that the gold svc gets you access to uhh... real american techs.... (tough typing that) not sure if its true or not but im considering it for just that reason

Dell has a better reputation for quality than HP or Acer. I don't buy the extended warranty since my credit card will double the 1 year warranty. PC Mag had a user survey showing that most ppl have problems with Dells during the first year of ownership. But if kids will have access to laptop, you may want to get the extended warranty.

My waranty is about to expire in July, but I have had it with 1 hour and 40 mitutes waiting, then I get this yo yo from India who casually hangs up the phone and I am ready to explode. Three members of my family have Dell Computers it started when my sister and husband both lost their jobs I lent them my Demention 800 MHz in year 2000, my mom chimed in when I wanted my $2000 computer back, she says your loaded and the children need to learn the computer. Mom said to send my sister a note that it was *my* intention to give the computer to her and her now employed family as a Christmas present.

Off Topic: Yeah I am loaded living in this low rent Elderly and Disabled apartment building, with no dates from women who see the wheelchair and are turned off, the money piles up and over 20 years there is a pile.
After the Dell is toast I am thinking about a better wait time than brand name, I have been convinced all the computers are made in Malaysia the American manufacturers just put their software and their name on the lid.

I had a dell inspiron 8100 that had an HD faliure 3 years after I owned it. Then one month later the power brick also failed so I had dell send me replacements. If I hadn't bought the warranty then it would've cost me money to replace those although you can argue that the $300 I spent to buy the warranty probably cost more than the items I replaced. However, if the mobo had died, that would've definitely been worse. Also, the lcd panel started having problems and I was planning to replace it until it was crushed in an unfortunate accident (I didnt have accidental coverage).

The Complete Care (covered if I drop it, etc) program was the reason I purchaced a Dell. While I normally wouldn't go for the 4 year warrenty, 4 year accident coverage sounds like a great deal to me.

I don't buy extended warranties. I'm forced to sell them at work and they cause more problems than they solve. But then again, this is a horrible national retail chain in which I don't want to name.

On my Sony laptop it failed a month into operation (battery charging system got confused), I sent it to get fixed, and it came back good without problems. For an entire year and a half it ran without issues while being traveled around with and moved to various places (sometimes bumped too) until a stick of ram died a couple of months ago. Generally speaking, from my experience selling electronics over the past 4 years if it's going to break, you're going to find out pretty fast. And even if there is a problem I'd rather order the part and install it myself. Normally the cheaper items break quickly and at any time, but the more expensive items last longer which is why I typically go for expensive rather than cheap paired with a big warranty.

I think that consumer reports recommends them IF the cost is 10% or less of the purchase price of the item. Probably a good rule of thumb. I have bought tons of these for Best Buy STuff and have only use it once on a viewsonic flat panel that went bad at the 1 year 2 months point. Although I think it had a 2 year warrenty as standard, but it was easier to go to BB and just get a new one as opposed to shipping it back to the manufacture. I can get a 2 year on my new XPS Gen 2 for $139, so i'll probably order it when I get the laptop, although I did not order it on the initial order. I have heard that all laptops these day use very cheap parts and I would guess that for $139 for 2 years is a good bet since I rarely keep an electronocs device that long anyway.

The more you $$$ you dump into the initial laptop purchase - the more attractive the warranty becomes since the price is fixed. Also if you think you will sell the laptop within a year or so I think a warranty is a good deal as it will be easier to sell a laptop on EBAY that is still under a transferrable warranty.

How many of you now are using computers that you bought 3 years ago? Since this is a notebook enthusiast site, I would guess that most of you are not. I usually sell my notebooks before the year is up and use the proceeds to buy a new notebook with the latest hardware. If you want extended protection, use an American Express card for the purchase because it will automatically double the standard warranty.

I just read that entire .pdf. They won't replace it due to fire or intentional damage. The fire thing is a bit odd, but, I can live with that. I still think it's an excellent policy through EPP. Thanks for reinforcing my beliefs.
