Several things with my new 8890

I finally got Windows XP installed however I've ran into several roadblocks.
1. The redraw rate on the lcd is terrible, when i move around any box it gets all choppy. looking at my task manager is jumps ti 50% CPU just moving it around.
2. I'd show you screenshots but it looks fine on my desktop computer. The Bliss background as well as part of My Computer where it has all the buttons looks liek it has some weird skin disease. It has random blotches of lighter gray, then dark gray etc. Nothing is smooth. I've switched to windows classic and the vortex space backgorund and it looks find, but the windows are still choppy.
3. Drivers -- I need to get service pack 1 (Manual says to install using SP1), which didn't come with the copy of XP I have on me. I would try installing the Network card driver but in the cd it D:\Drivers\LAN it has no setup.exe, which the manual insists it should.

Help?

EDIT: I'm going to reinstall using a disk with Service Pack 1 on it, but still any ideas?

and what is ATA Driver For D800P?

Redraw rate sounds like the video driver is not installed or you have not set the proper resolution and colors.

Service Pack 1 can be downloaded via "Windows Update" in your start menu. The XP Service packs help immensely for all sorts of issues.

LAN drivers....use the "Add new hardware" control panel to add your network card. It will ask for the location of the driver so just lead it to the appropriate folder.

I think your looking at driver issues. Try installing the newest ATI drivers and see if that helps. I don't think your problem is hardware.

The ATA driver is a driver for your IDE disk controller. Go to your device manager and you should see something listed under "IDE ATA Controllers" (I'm going off memory here). Many times the default ATA Controller driver works just fine but you can take advantage of the better driver by getting the properties of your existing ATA controller and using the "Update Driver" button.

Ok I was thinking it was the driver...and thanks for clearing up the LAN issue. I'm installing an XP version with SP1 now, then i'll run through the driver process again. I'll keep you guys posted.

the problem is certainly the video driver. i experience the same with every new install of xp. upon installation of the ATI files you will experience the screen in its full glory.

Heh, installed ATI drivers. Everyone drags moothly, excepts the colors still don't fade. I used to drivers that came with the cd, can someone else refer me to perhaps better ones?

Colors still don't fade? What do you mean by that?

There are 2 video drivers on the CD, make sure you install the non-WHQL version 7.93, not the 7.89 WHQL version as it has some issues with DirectX.

Sorry I should be more specific in my posts. I did install the non-WHQL drivers and it still gives me the problem. It appears that the colors don't blend together smoothly. One the backgrounded I've selected the "Windows XP" background and I can clearly see where the shades of blue changed. They have jagged edges. I'd post screen shots but the ones I take on my laptop look perfectly normal on my desktop computer. This is the only problem I see so far.

DID YOU FORGET TO POST PICS?

What, you received your 8890 and did not yet post any pictures.
That cannot be true. I must have missed them. Of course you cannot be a super sadist!?

Just to check the obviouse you don't have it set under 256 colors under the display settings do you? If so set it to 16bit or higher.

I was just about to post the same idea. It certainly sounds like it's set at 256.

High color 32. And I don't have a digital camera to post pics, sorry. Other than this issue everything seems fine. I have yet to test it on games yet though so I'll post back here later. I don't any other way to describe, I'll see if I can steal my girlfriends digital though.

We need pics. Not just for your problem but we want to see more pics of the 8890.

Sagerites (I kinda like that name) want to see pics of the newest notebooks on the average user's desk.

I've noticed the same thing. The best way I could describe it is that it's similar to blockiness artifacts like when watching low quality MPEG's. It seems to be more pronounced when using wallpapers on the desktop, but I've also noticed it on the toolbar of Internet Explorer.

This may just be a limitation of the LCD panel (hard for me to tell as this is my first)

When playing Quake 3 there is also some ghosting, but by no means is it unplayable.

I must say though, this notebook is sweet!

I see those same blocky patches on the Internet Explorer gray toolbar-type areas...

What's the cause? Just the LCD's characteristics? Gaming it is hardly noticeable... playing Medal of Honor is fantastic! Also I did not notice it on any DVD's...

There's probably more qualified people on these boards but since no one else has answered.... Wondering if you are running it at it's native resolution of 1280 x 1024? Try different resolutions. Does it make a difference?

Nope I see it on all resolutions. But atleast I'm not the only one, I think it some sort of driver because on some backgrounds I don't notice anything. it's weird.

Post a screenshot of what you are seeing.

I also saw that on my wallpaper. However, I watched 2 episodes of Buffy on DVD last night and it was gorgeous. Seems to be something with the Windoze desktop...?
