in the dell forums, there is discussion about the new XPS gen 2 and there are supposed dell "insiders" claiming to have used the machine and they claim that the video card is a 16p nvidia 6800 ultra. a 16p ati mobility x800 xt is another possibility mentioned by another insider. if these rumors turn out to be true, will the upgrade work with the sager and it's various clones now that the interface has been standardized?

Actually, I'm not sure whether the interface has been standardized for laptops yet or not. However, if it has and it fits the dimension and power requirements, you should be able to use it in a Sager. By the way, most "insiders" are simply people who read a rumor in a blog somewhere and think they are the "man" now.

of course it's all rumor and speculation, but my question was really more of a technical "can it be done" one. from what i understand, ati and nvidia have both developed modular mobile gpu standards... axiom and nvm respectively? something like that? so does the sager accomodate both since it's able to use the mx800 and go6800 or is the interface a custom one built just for the sagers?
and of course if the rumors turn out to be true, will dell use these "standards" or force nvidia to produce a custom module that only fits their laptop....

You are right about Axiom (ATi) and MXM (nVidia) in that they are both standards developed by the 2 companies. However, the standards are not 100% compatible. Thus, as demonstrated by Post #12 at http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=49133, Sager uses some hybrid to allow the swapping of ATi and nVidia GPUs. I don't really know what Dell does (do they even allow both companies' GPUs in one computer. If not, they are probably using MXM for the nVidia laptops).
EDIT: Crap, I spoke too soon. The thread I mentioned says that both MXM and Axiom cards will fit into the 9860's interface. So, yes, if the Dell's module is MXM or Axiom compliant, it should work.

.I re-read the thread, and it doesn't say that both MXM and Axiom fit into the module, but that Axiom and MXM modules will be retro-fitted to fit Sager's interface. So, my original answer was right and the Dell module (if it truly is only MXM compliant) will not fit into the Sager.

What chipset is Dell going to use on this new XPS? If it is a 915 variant, then most likely this new graphics chip by nvidia will be capable of working in the 9860 (unless thermally it is too hot). Clevo does use its own proprietary design to fit graphics modules into the 9860, and as long as 9860’s are being sold in resellers like pctorque, clevo will want to keep the computer as competitive as possible and will most likely produce the new module.
