Any good sonoma video editing laptops?

Thread Starter
I just need a good, Sonoma based laptop for mobile editing, something with a good bit of video/audio hook-ups like an RCA and SVid.....I'm not entirely sure how much video memory i need.

BTW, 64mb of dedicated vid mem - exactly how good is it? it seems rather low.

64 MB is enough for a 16 Megapixel screen with a 32-bit colordepth. An example would be a 4600 x 3450 screen. If you use a screen resolution lower than that, it's enough for you. Probably your graphics card doesn't even support resolutions that high.

If you need good audio hookups, you are much better off going with an external device, like a pcmcia card or a usb or firewire audio device. Most laptop audio cards just arent nearly up to snuff.

I'm looking forward to editing on my 9300. 17" screen + lots of RAM + 7200RPM HDD + FireWire = it should be pretty damn good.

well for vid editing your going to need at least 1gb or ram to be conformable while doing your job.

sadly at the moment the biggest laptop HD is only 100gb@ 5200 rpm, that is ok, but you want a 7200 rpm drive.

i would suggest a 15 or 17 inch apple powerbook, because for free they come with a movie editor called imovie and if your willing to pay you can get Final Cut Pro and that is use widely by editors.

the powerbooks have S-vid and DVI outputs and the 17 inch has dual dvi and they have optical audio out/in as well.

you will be wanted to get a a external firewire HD for you work. i currently edit on a 15 inch powerbook with 512 ram and 64 mb vram, it does the job, but with large files it can get slow i should seriously get my self another ram chip.

here is a sales site http://www.apple.com/powerbook/ do a google for reviews you will find thousands

Check out the new xps2 from dell.

I would check Toshiba's S2 and M3...good video cards and both are fully customizable. The 6600go will be able to take anything you throw...

I'll pass on the Mac. As for the RAM, I'm starting at 512, but I fully intend to upgrade to 2GB in the near future. Hard drive space? That 60GB/7200RPM drive should more than cover me for any schoolwork in my immediate future. My 9300 will have s-video and DVI out. iMovie is basically below the level I'm working at. I'll concede that Final Cut is pretty nice, but I do ok with Premiere, and I've experimented with Avid as well, so the software isn't really an issue either.
