Forgive my ignorant question, but what is the difference between these memory types? I assume that they are all Double Data Rate, but what does the 2 and the 3 mean at the end?

Also, where you you find that info on the Nvidia site?

Thanks!

Hmm, I wonder if the form factor between the m70 and the XPS2 makes it incompatible to stuff the 6800go ULTRA into it.. I'd pay extra if they'd make it happen..

o no
this sux if its gddr2 only
do you lose anything by sending it back?

F-33 ( so 300 MHz model ).
are u sure it's the video ram you are lookin at?

there's no way u can see the ram chips unless you take out the LCD, palmrest, KB, AND the heatsink on the video card... the video card is on the top right area of the notebook.

take a look...

on the NVIDIA site they only mention that the Quadro FX go 1400 does support gddr3 (does support != does only support)

difference between the memory types is 'only' the clock rate: gddr up to 300 MHz, gddr2 up to no idea MHz, gddr3 up to 1.0 GHz and further

impact:
- around up to +1000 3dmark05 points
- around 5-10% more performance in games
- 10-15% more power needed and more heat caused

Btw: why are all so sure that Dell's NVIDIA Geforce 6800 go model is equiped with gddr3 memory? - since they have standing everywhere: DDR 256 MB...

I was looking at the product listings on the Nvidia site, and in the specs for the Go1400 they say that the memory bandwidth is 19.4 GB/s (I don't see any mention of GDDR 2/3 - at least on this page)
http://www.nvidia.com/page/quadrofx_go.html

For the Go6800, they say the bandwidth is "up to 39.4 GB/s" (and I see they mention the gddr2/3 there as well, along with the 300 vs 600MHz clock speeds)

yes, I'm pretty sure - one of my collegs has also got his M70 this week (and he has no complete care; overall he likes to disassamble things and reassamble them... welll .. . nevertheless) - I held his graphics adapter module in my own hands and on the other side you can see a few memory chips. I noted the numbers and googled to the URL I posted previously. Its GDDR memory (module revision: 00B, 14.01.2005)

true... but it's also saying "DDR 256" for the XPS gen2 as well, and not specifically GDDR3...

here's a 3dMark comparison of DDR to GDDR...

and one of our forum members ran 3dMARK on his M70 and he's getting numbers much closer to GDDR3...

i'm confused as well, and would like to know.

Can anyone answer the question of putting the XPS's 6800 Ultra into the m70?

Actually, those numbers are closer to the 9860 GDDR2 version instead of the GDDR3 version

it's pin compatible (PCI-e), but the module is probably physically different and will not fit...

once the online service manual is up for the XPS gen2, you can check it out and compare it to the M70.

maybe gddr !- ddr ... no idea, but the chips used in the M70 are named gddr by its manufacturer (who also produces ddr chips).

mine have been:
3dmark 05: 2 407
3dmark 03: 6 285
3dmark 01SE: 17 824
pcmark 04: 4 301

not much away from gddr3 either He used more recent drivers...

yea, its confusing - still, nothing to worry about slow games or slow 3d development...

yeah... not a big gamer myself. i've yet to put a 3D game on it... i use MAYA 24/7, and it runs that great.
I am more of a gamer and looking at the XPS2 benchmarks, I'll probably be returning the M70 for it. Plus, I want the glossy display. I'm not crazy about the LEDS and 17 inch but I can live with it.
could the lower score come from the ram and chip being clocked lower for stability
post #59 of 59
if you spec one out at the dell canada site it says

nVidia® NV41GL 4XAGP w/ 256MB DDR2 Video Memory
