How to install WinXP on the 9860 using ATA Mode

How to install WinXP on the 9860 using ATA Mode (Non-RAID) with a USB Floppy Drive. You need the Promise Drivers because WinXP can not

1. You will need a USB Floppy Drive that is compatible with 9860. If you got/bought one from the reseller then that is good. If you bought one on

your own it might not work or partially work. I have not kept a list of compatible USB Floppy Drives but I do recall seeing a few times that the Sony

USB Floppy Drives do not work. Some have said they would Slipstream the Promise Drivers into the WinXP CD but I have not seen anyone get it to work
yet.

2. What to copy onto the floppy disk. This is where some people get stuck.
On the Utilities and Drivers CD copy the right files to the floppy disk.
For ATA Mode goto
\drivers\raid\ATA\ and copy everything in that folder to floppy disk or a:\
When finished copying this is what the A:\ should have on it.

as a contrast if you were using the RAID Drivers this would be on the A:\
\drivers\raid\fasttrak\

3. Make sure the BIOS [F2] is correct for ATA Mode.
BIOS - Advance tab
a. Disable the Card Reader so you don't end up installing Windows on Drive H:\ ? (Also do not leave any other external HDD USB or Firewire or Card

Readers attached)
b. RAID/ATA Select Mode. Choose ATA as RAID is the Default

Now F10 or Save and Exit the the BIOS. Then get back into the BIOS. This is to make sure the Hard Drive(s) show up correctly in the BIOS.

BIOS - Boot tab
Boot Priority Order
Make sure IDE 0: or IDE 1: (which ever Optical Disk Drive you put the WinXP/Win2K cd in - IDE 0: is the top one) is before the Hard Drive. In this

case PCI SCSI: SATA378 TX2plus D0/D1. The BIOS will not list the drive name but Master(D0) and Slave(D1).

Now back to installing WinXP. Plug in the USB Floppy Drive with the floppy disk inserted. This will save you a little time later. When
Windows Setup starts one of the first things it asks is if you need to install 3rd Party or RAID drivers, so hit F6 at that time or you might have to
start over. Because the Promise ATA Drivers are not Windows Logo Passed you will also get a warning if you want to install the drivers. Make sure you

say YES. I'm not sure when Windows is finished accessing the drivers on the Floppy Drive so I just left it plugged in until setup was finished. Once

Windows finishes installing go back into the BIOS and enable the Card Reader. Then install the Drivers in order per the Utilities and Drivers CD.

There are newer Video and Audio drivers so download those and run them in place of the ones on the CD.

Yes there are newer drivers on other sites, but make sure your system is functioning correctly with the Official Sager Drivers first.

Awesome write-up. Thanks for taking the time out to do that. I just received my 9860 today and just to double check, I referenced your write-up. Thanks again.

Hmmm so this would not be a machine for my wife

My wife likes things to be sooooo easy that practically my 3 year old could do it, so this'll be one more reason why she'll tell me that I was nuts for ordering one

Thanx for the info bud, I printed it out for my records for when I need to do a reinstall & when I do get around for my second drive for Raid-0.

When trying to install Windows on a new HDD (NP9860) in non-RAID configuration, we are facing the following problem:

When we are asked whether we would like to install 3rd party SCSI Drivers, we hit F6 and later are asked to insert the diskette with the drivers. The driver is loaded, the installation proceeds:

-Setup is starting Windows
- To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER
- Agreement --> F8
- setup lists partitions --> we choose which partition Windows has to be installed to
- cheking drive C:.. --> OK

and here our problem appears. We get the following screen:
-----------------------------
Insert the disk labeled:

Promise SATA378 Driver Diskette
into drive A:

Press ENTER when ready
-----------------------------------------
Unfortunately, when we press ENTER, nothing happens: the computer does not read from a Floppy Drive.

In any case we suppose that the drivers have be uploaded already.
Does anybody has any idea on what the reason might be? We have heard that some of USB Floppy Drives are not entirely compatible with 9860. We are using USB Floppy Drive NEC UF0002. Sager Techs has said that it has to be OK.

I am looking forward to hearing from anyone with a suggestion on what the matter could be and any solution.

Sincerely yours

Gytis

It does sound like the USB Floppy Drive is not compatible. Sager (Clevo) uses Y-E Data USB Floppy Drives.

1. change the boot order in the bios to CD Rom
2. enable the floppy drive in the bios
3. from another computer OR the Sager driver site download and or copy the SATA drivers to a formatted floppy disk

now with the computer turned OFF connect the floppy drive and insert the SATA disk.

power up and give it a go.

let me know if its a go.

This is definitely the problem with your USB floppy drive. We have seen such a problem occuring besides Sony with some NEC USB floppy drives.

You will not be able to load windows as NP9860 will not read from this particular floppy drive. You need a USB FDD of either YE Data or TEAC. The Teac model number which works for sure is FD-05PUW. There are several versions of this model available, e.g. FD-05PUW200, 299, 256 etc., but it looks like any of them works.
If you cannot find this FDD, you can order one from our sales department.

Regards

Gintas
