Tecra M2 - Hibernate - Windows XP

Hi,

I have Toshiba M2 with Windows XP. I am trying to use Hibernate mode. However, it is working only if the battery reachs the end of the charge. When I close the cover (set by Toshiba Power), it doesn't work. Nothing happens.
Is there a function or anything else that I need to set to the hipernate mode?
Thanks.

On my satellite, you open the power application and there are modes for "plugged in" and "on battery". On each, click details and one of the tabs has options as to what to do when the lid is closed and when the power button is pushed.

Hello Richk,

I have already opened the toshiba power application and the option Hibernate is already marked, but the hibernate mode doesn't work. I was thinking that there was a possibility to set anything at SETUP (Pressing ESC at startup), but no option about it is found.

I don't know if there is thing to do or to set the configuration.

Does anyone have any idea?

Thanks

Hi,

Futher information:

I have re-installed the operating system uisng the recovery CD.
BIOS installed is 1.40 (it is the last one).
The only way to work hibernate mode is when the battery reachs the end of the charge, but when I try to close the cover (it is marked at Toshiba Power), it doesn't work.

Thanks.

Even though the option to allow hibernation is set, you must also define the "close the lid" event to hibernate. Under "power save mode", get the details for normal operation, then it is on the "system power mode" tab. Do the same for battery operation.

The other possibility is that a driver is not compatible with hibernation. Before hibernating, the OS querries each device driver. If you have any extra hardware such as a PC card, it is possible that its driver cannot hibernate. In that case, there may be an entry in the event log.

Hello Richk,

the definition to hibernate when the laptop is closed is already setted. As I said, I don't understand why it works when critical battery is setted, but not when I close the laptop or when I click on turn off botton and press SHIFT to change standby to hibernate.
I don't know if there is any driver or software in conflict, but it will be hard to identify it.
the operating system is Windows XP Pro with SP2, 1GB RAM.

Thanks.

If you are NOT running SP2 and have 1GB or more of RAM then see this:

Hello jkonrad,

Sorry, but I am using Service Pack 2. I have already read about this article, and I also tried to install, but a message says that the SP2 is newer than the fix.
Thanks anyway, do you have any other idea?

Thanks.

not at the moment, unless you are the same guy posting on the WUGNET Laptop forum this is the second time I have seen this posted and haven't come up with a solution, 'cause I don't have one or the problem - sorry

Is there an error written in the event log? When I had a similar problem with a Dell laptop, There was a message about a driver not being able to hibernate.

Hello ricky,

I didn't look at these events. I guess that the information below comes from the event that was tried to hibernate.

The description for Event ID ( 1 ) in Source ( TMESBS ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: TMESBS; Waring!; ; code: 17h; CM_Query_And_Remove_SubTreeW ERROR.

Remember: The hibernation works only if the battery end up.

Just in case, I am the guy in the WUGNET.

Thanks.

TMESBS is the service for Toshiba's docking station. Are you running with a docking station?

Hello richk,

I don't know what docking station means. Could you please explain it for me or tell me if this dock could be the hibernate fail?

Thanks.
I don't know what sort of docking station is used by your model. A docking station is a plug-in device that has ports where you can attach things like a monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc. It is used in a situation where you use a laptop at work (as if it were a desktop), by plugging the laptop into the docking station. You leave the stuff polugged in to it and you can remove the laptop and travel with it. If you aren't using a docking station, that service shouldn't be starting.

hello richk,

after your explanation, I think that I don't use dock station. I use the laptop in my work, but the only connection that I do in the laptop is the usb port, I connect mouse, mobile and iomega hdd. As long as these connections aren't dock station, I don't know why this service is active. Could be any software using this feature?
do you think that this problem is related with the hibernation? is there a way to solve this problem?
what do you explain that the hibernation works when the battery ends up?
do you have any suggestion to solve it?
thanks.

I'm really not familiar with your model, but according to the Toshiba website, they call the docking station for that model Advanced Port Replicator III. If that driver cannot support hibernation for some reason, it certainly could be your problem. Your devices all connect to USB ports? I don't know what "mobile" means, but I thought your machine had 2 ports. I also don't know what the iomega HDD needs to start. It looks to me like your machine is fairly new. Perhaps you should call Toshiba.

Hi richk,

Let me explain you better. Mobile means that I connect my mobile phone with the USB port to synchronize the information.
Yes, Tecra M2-S730 has only 2 ports, and I don't use all devices together. The mouse is always connected, but the other port sometimes I use with the mobile, or Iomega HDD...
This laptop has already worked before. I needed to reinstall the operating system using Toshiba recovery CD. Almost all software installed before it was intalled again. The difference between these installations it is the service pack 2. I don't know if the service pack 2 would be the problem, but at this moment to uninstall the SP2 will be difficulty. We need to find other way to solve it (if so).
If you find out other possibility, please tell me.
thanks.

It is possible that a driver is not compatible with SP2. I would suggest that you contact Toshiba. If you decide that the docking station driver is the problem, I can tell you how to stop it.

Hi rachk,

In the other forum, John told me to follow these procedures (reintall some software): ACPI modules - boot - Power Saver - boot - Mobile Extensions - boot.

Maybe these procedures could solve the problem. I will test it tomorrow, because the laptop is at the office.

thanks.
