I've had the Linksys WRT54gs for about 6-7 months and have had zero problems. I have a mixed wireless setup 1 lappy on a wifi card, 1 lappy and 1 desktop wired in. Setup on all three took less than 45 minutes and I'd never setup a network before.
From my research, before purchase, the Linksys took highest spot in most tests. The linksys was one of the few wireless routers that would work flawlessly w/ other brand's wireless cards. With just about every other wireless router it was recommended that you buy the same brand wifi card as the router.
If you're not too concerned w/ $, then I'd look at the Belkin Pre-n wireless card and router. Speeds and range is much better than a/b/g. The price difference is not that much and if it had been available when I purchased, that is the route I would've taken.
Also, I believe that there has been at least two other threads on this topic so you may want to search for them, they both had decent info.
