My 9200 is comming next week and I was wondering if reformatting the HD voids the warranty? Or how about a linux installation?

Thanks,

Reformatting the HD does NOT void the warranty. That's why they also send you a reinstallation Windows CD.

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Installing Linux would do nothing to the warrantee either. Dell doesn't really care what you do with the hard drive.

Alright thanks... what about this hidden partition i keep hearing about?

Anything worth keeping that they include in terms of software?

hmm i wonder if the hidden one voids it

The partition is pretty much where Dell keeps "restore files". But if you're an advanced pc user you shouldnt even have to care bout these partitions that Dell makes.

whatever you do with the harddrive dell wouldnt care, just do not open the laptop up and fiddle with the parts.

Well not really. Just cover up your tracks and don't leave any of your dna behind.

Right. Although I don’t know how many times you would need to open your hard drive, if you put everything exactly like you found it to begin with, you can sometimes get away with it.

I’ve actually heard of people changing their CD-ROMs without getting caught – hiding it from Dell allowing them to keep on with the warrantee. But never would reformatting your hard drive, or even installing an alternate OS - like Linux - void your warrantee.
