Tecra A4 (available, at least, in UK) seems perfect from my modest point of view. But...

Have you ever seen one or it's a Toshiba "official hoax"?

sorry, no laptop yet...

Yeah, I know that THEY SAY it exists: http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.c...aShop=reseller

[in fact I like the canadian more than the british: better procesor (1.8 instead of 1.6) but, mainly, better graphics card (x600 instead of x300)]

But again, not available to buy at Toshiba UK site, not available at canadian site, not available at main webshops...

Will you believe me that other two configurations of Tecra A4 (one with a celeron a the other with a higher processor and hard disk [code: PTA40E-01600VEN]) have dissapeared in the last days from the Toshiba UK site?

So, again, have anybody seen a Tecra A4?

So, finally, from a Toshiba official distributor (UK):
"Unfortunately these notebooks have not been released by Toshiba yet."

But they're already selling them in the Toshiba website! And they were selling them for at least two weeks!! Even those models that now have dissapeared from the website!!!

I guess is rather a sociological study to see how many people is willing to give a thousand quid for a laptop that does not exist...

hehe, quite a few times, after doing some research on the internet, I found I knew MUCH more than the customer services representative or distributor, from whom I was trying to get some clarification of certain model.

do not trust what they say, sometimes

Here in Portugal that model as come out this week for sale. I'm thinking in buying one myself.

Reflexmee: When you get your machine, could you post here your opinion about it? It would help me a lot.

2º question: I'm interested in get 1 slot with 1 GB of memory RAM. Here, in Toshiba, they don´t switch the existing 512 MB RAM by the one that i want. Does anybody know what kind of memory should i get to upgrade my notebook?

Thank you all in advanced

well i would say that corsair is a very ery good ram manufacturer....i trust them for all my ram purchases and i have never been disappointed. from looking at the canadian tecra m2 specs on the site i would get a single stick of pc2700 notebook ram, please make sure you do't get desktop ram because it has happened before. I would check with toshiba to see if pc3200 is usable, it is a faster ram and is generally better, and if you can use pc3200 then make the switch to that by purchasing a 1gb stick of pc3200. Also don't try to run the two types of ram ath the same time otherwise it will not let you fully utilize the speed advantage of the pc3200.

A4 memory

I was just browsing the pdf version of detailed specs for the A4 and under memory, it says:

256MB (Minimum)/2048MB (Maximum), 2 memory slots using
256MB, 512MB, or 1024MB PC2700 DDR2 400MHz SDRAM
2.5V SODIMM memory modules

pardon my ignorance, but isn't the 400MHz the PC3200 and isn't PC2700 333MHz?

And is not DDR2 the new memory running at 533MHz?

[BTW, please reflexmee post your first impressions/review here!]

The Tecra A4 does not come with the DDR2 memory. It only comes with the regular DDR ones, just like many other early Sonoma based laptops. This is apparently a let down for many people. But when I was purchasing, the first priority for me is the screen quality and I really like Toshiba's TruBrite. That's why I still went with the Tecra A4 even though it only has the DDR1 memory.

As for the A4 review, I will post one as soon as my laptop arrives. This forum has given me a lot of useful information during my research on laptops and I will definitely post a review to help others who may be interested in this particular laptop.

Great!
That may come before my planned buying date (mid March) so you may give me good advice on buying the A4.
(cause I may end up buying it without first seeing it [since it is still not in the streets of UK], something that makes me sweat profusely...)

The laptop has been shipped out on Mar 1st. It should arrive on Saturday or Monday.

just discovered the tecra m4, and now waiting for first impressions from reflexmee. i may have to buy this one, looks nice

im leaning towards toshiba because of their trubright screen which is from my experience amazing
post #18 of 46
Hmm it seems the A4 is at least better than S2 in one way. WSXGA screen!

Otherwise, both same..ehhehe
any of the new tecras have the glossy screen?
Finally! The A4 arrived!
I'll type up a first-impression review tonight; gotta work on my other stuff first.

smilepack:
The A4 does have WSXGA, but unfortunately, you can't get TruBrite at the same time.
