The A4 does have WSXGA, but unfortunately, you can't get TruBrite at the same time.
Now where talking baby! I gotta see this review. I've been eyeing it all weekend. The only let down for me is the DDR and not DDR2 memory. At least that is what i've seen so far.

All right, all right, responsabilities first, take it easy...

The A4 here in UK [they say] comes with Trubrite WXGA, but I will try to check on that. The other difference is the ATI x300 in two of the three available models (the lowest one, with a Celeron, has integrated graphics).

Thanks for sharing your first impressions!

Just a few questions (that you may want to answer now, or just use them to add some points to your full review):

. Do you feel it "solid" or "well built" (for example, comparing it against a Thinkpad, a Satellite, the Asus you have used or a Dell)?
. Was the setup "easy" or "well guided"? Any problems (apart from uninstalling the garbage in the system tray)?
. How many available space in the HD do you have just after startup?
. Have you checked battery life (does it look similar to the published values under "normal use")?

Enjoy!!!

nice machine dude, i think that the uxga trubrite on the canadian tecra s2 models is a big improvement over the A4's wsxga. I do love the widescreen of the A4 but really the high resolution is where it is at and in that the S2 far outclasses the A4....but still, the A4 is a great machine just like all the other tecra's out there, very solid and well built in my opinion. The screen thing just comes down to preference since they are all good with toshiba.

I wonder if they will revise the A4 with DDR2. Otherwise it is a very impressive system. Nice chassis design too.

-I feel that this laptop is very well built throughout. There's no flex whatsoever when you are picking up the laptop with two hands at the corners of the machine while the screen is open. The whole machine is made of thick plastic material. You have to push quite hard on the back of the screen to see any ripple effect. The latches of the screen is pretty tight and the screen will not wiggle much. In my opinion, the ridigity of the A4 is about the same as the ASUS M6N. It definitely feels much more solid than the Dell D610 I've previously used. The only area I could complain about its rigidness is the DVD ROM area. There's a bit of a flex when you push against the bottom of the ROM area because the plastic there is obviously thiner.

Aside from the uninsatallation of the grabage programs, there really isn't much to do in terms of setting up. The only thing required was to enter some general things like User name, Network Setup, which are all from Windows XP. All these took about 3 minutes. In short, there isn't a guide, and won't be necessary to setup this laptop.

. How many available space in the HD do you have just after startup?

If I remember correctly (because I've installed quite a few programs since then), there was about 32GB left just after startup. But they included the Microsoft OneNote 2003, which takes up 4GB alone. They also installed Office 2003 Small Business, which takes up a couple hundred MB.

. Have you checked battery life (does it look similar to the published values under "normal use")?

Under normal usage (ie web browsing, typing reports, excels, screen at 5/8 brightness), it gives me 3 hours flat.

Enjoy!!!

Hope this helps!!

Hey Reflexmee,

I'll take you up on your offer!

There seems to be quite a bit of confusion as to the Spec sheet of the Custom A4 on Toshibas website. It gives some specs for DDR2, but others dont jive.

Is there anyway to look in your BIOS and or check the actual physical memory to see what kind is installed? Any and all info is truly appreciated!

Thanks!

Sure, will check that tomorrow and get back to you guys!

I could not find a way to get into BIOS
Anyone know how?
post #34 of 46
I think I asked this before, not sure.

I wonder why they don't have the 7200RPM drives as a selected option for the A4. Not even the 5400RPM. only the 4200RPM

reflex- on my older tecra you can get into the bios by holding down the esc key immediately after hitting the power button (right about when the red Toshiba appears, if not an instant before), it'll then ask you to check the system settings and press f1. Maybe that still works in the newer ones??

correction: I changed hit f1 during boot to esc -- you hit f1 afterwards. Sorry about the error

Just got mine: customized with GeForce Go6600. And: nope, the RAM is DDR 333. May I remind that the bandwidth of the FSB of Sonoma will not let you benefit from any faster memory, than 333... However DDR2 does have better energy-saving parameters, so this would still be somewhat preferential.

Keep asking, I'll look back here some time later.

Really?! Hmm I thought the FSB of Sonoma is 533Mhz

PC2700 -> 333Mhz
PC3200 -> 400Mhz
PC4200 -> 533Mhz (DDRII)

No?

OK, finally, 1 mo. after starting this thread asking about its status as true or fictitious, I have ordered a Toshiba Tecra A4. Its specs are:

Pentium M 730 1.6GHz
512MB DDR333 + 512MB Kingston (identical specs, they say...)
15.4" WXGA TruBrite
ATI x300 64MB
60GB HDD 4200rpm
CDRW/DVD combo
WiFi 802.11 b/g
6-cell battery
Windows XP Pro
2.8 kg

It's supposed to arrive tomorrow!!!
