tech support

I have decided to return to school for my masters and need a laptop that will be a desktop replacement. I have read the posts for months doing my research. It seems for every recommendation there is a detractor of each make and model. I`m sure there are many excellent laptops out there as well as some real lemons. My issue is tech support! I am not as computer literate as many of you who post here.It seems that some of you should be doing tech support yourselves. My question is.. Is there a manufacturer that does not out-source it`s tech support to some foreign country? I have enough trouble understanding tech support in english, heavy accents make it more difficult than it has to be. I have nothing against people from other countries but I want to make any trouble shooting I have to do as easy as possible. My experience to this point has been with Dell. Some good and some terrible, but always the heavy accent seemed to add to my difficulty understanding what they were saying. I`m just looking for support I can understand. Any opinions would be welcome. Thanks

Something with on-site tech support may work the best for you. I hate to recommend Dell, but if you go with one of their systems with a 3yr on-site warranty (nights and weekends included) you should be fairly well covered.

Just make sure you keep an eye out for Dell coupons... they had one that just expired for $600 off Inspirons totally 1599 or more (not applicable with other discounts).

They have offered a $750 off $1500 dollar purchase before as well. If they do that again, you can pick up a pretty nice system w/ a great warranty for a price you can't refuse.

You'll still have to make the initial call to tech support in India, I imagine, but you can just make it out like nothing is working and get them to send the on-site technician the next day.

The other alternative is to get something like an IBM or Asus, and just not have problems to begin with

I can only speak from my own experience. Having said that, stay away from Acer as their support is rather... lacking.
