The gamers' dream come true....

In a quest for bragging rights, both NVIDIA and ATI seem to suddenly be in a mad rush to be the first to integrate 512MB of memory on a consumer graphics card. Technically NVIDIA struck first (as their PR hit my inbox first), specifically Gainward, with their Gainward CoolFX PowerPack! Ultra/2800PCX “Golden Sample”. The 2800 PCX GS is a PCI-E GeForce 6800 Ultra card with a 450MHz core clock, and 512MB of "carefully qualified" 1.2GHz GDDR3 memory, video-out, and dual DVI. The card also ships with a single-slot water cooler manufactured by Innovatek. The card will begin shipping at the end of next month, but price wasn't announced. If the 2800 PCX GS is too expensive for you, Gainward will also be producing a lower cost 512MB card that swaps the water cooler with copper cooling, the Gainward PowerPack! Ultra/2800 PCX “Golden Sample”.

X800 or current 6800 once again become bad cards........(sob sob )

Wow sounds like that thing runs really hot! sheesh

It's a desktop card, what u expect

I remember months back people were saying you didn't need 512MB on video card..

Bill Gates famous last words too..

Doom 3 runs great with 512MB video-ram..

Doom runs great with 128. I'm not gonna spend an extensive amount of money for a 512 graphics card. Theres barely any games that need 256.

In a bold move ATI announced a new video card with 4GB of VRAM and integrated SATA-2 interface onboard. Unfortunately, current OS cannot fully utilize 256-bit architecture of the device. Microsoft representative claimed that it will be possible to run upcoming 64-bit Windows OS in emulation mode or using one of the CPU daugther-cards. Both Intel and AMD are getting ready for release CPU daughter-cards with up to 128 MB of RAM integrated. It is possible to tap into VRAM by utilizing shared memory architecture. We hope to see CPU cards with more integrated memory in future.

Other vendors are keeping up with the trend. Creative is releasing Audigy 5 with 1GB of ARAM (Audio RAM). Logitech announced wireless keyboard with 512 MB of RAM. Now you can type in that important document with your computer off, and it will be transferred to computer next time you hit its power button.

There are rumors that we'll see up to 2GB of RAM in next generation of network cards.

wow...just...wow.

Is there really any game out there that uses above 256 now? I rarely see any even uses more than 128 now, no?

For your question, I found something here According to andrepeterhill, I think we will need one sooner or later .

Even the current round of games could probably make either of these cards start to crawl in some environments - if you pump the settings up high enough. I have the 6800Go Rev. 1 card overclocked to 346/686MHz (GPU/Memory) and it CAN'T play Far Cry at native res. (1680x1050) with 2xAA and 4xAniso smoothly, the frame rate frequently drops below 30fps in outdoor environments and sometimes even below 20fps, the highest settings I can use are 1440x900 res. with 2xAA and 4xAniso in order to get 30+fps consistently. At 1680x1050 with 4xAA and 8xAniso Half Life 2 achieves up to 100fps in some indoor environments on my 9860 but this drops to as low as 20fps in some outdoor scenes if there's movement, shooting and any water in the background, in fact if you move through the canals while there's a chopper over-head and you're looking at the spray come off the water the framerate drops to 6-9fps. Doom 3 is a similar story the highest settings I can take it to and achieve 30+fps at all times are 1280x1024 with 2xAA and Ultra High detail, if I take it to 4xAA the framerate drops down into the 20s in some areas.

Here is the ATI side of story about 512 MB video card

Quote:
On the ATI front, their PR is more mum, only announcing that they will be showing off a 512MB gaming card at the Texas Gaming Festival this weekend. The VPU used isn't mentioned, nor is a potential release date and price, but this tidbit from the PR provides some clues: "Participating in events like this gives us the opportunity to find out what gamers want and need for competitive gaming," said Rich Heye, Vice President and GM, Desktop Discrete Products, ATI. "And to say thanks for supporting ATI, we are giving attendees at this event an opportunity to check out the world's first 512MB gaming cards before we send them out to our software partners for development of next-generation games."

Requires, no. Can use? Well, doom3 will make use of 512 on its highest quality settings, but it runs just sweet on 256 cards (and even 128). Personally, I reckon 512 on a vidcard is a complete waste at this point in time.

I'm waiting for an SLI notebook, anything else is going to be second rate in the long run.

Yeah, the notebook would probably post and then run out of battery!

Better yet, a dual-GPU (not dual card) solution in a notebook. It's very possible. Mmm, 2 NV41m cores with 256mb GDDR3 each...drool.

i dont understand you guys. what are all your problems?? "there's no need for a 512mb card" boo hoo hoo! you guys keep talkin like that and if we're all on this forum in 5 years, im gonna look back to these quotes you guys are putting up bitching about technology progressing. dont you realize when the hardware is in place, software will be made to utilize it? if i can get one, i'll buy a 512 card, ya know why? cause a 512 card will make D3 look better than a 256 card! if you talk about money, well. . . im with you there, always stay a step behind the new crap so you get decent prices on your stuff. otherwise you pay too much for some new fandangled bs that's gonna be someone's garbge in 3 years. i'll wait 4 months to save 3k. but hey, if we're talkin "oooooo i dont have games that will use a 512 card........wahhh", then i say to hell with yall, gimme the 512 and i'll use tha bitch to play dawn of war and CS source. they'll look a hella lot better with the 512 than the 128 my lappy has right now. bah.

"some new fandangled bs that's gonna be someone's garbge in 3 years"

(sorry if this doesn't come out right, i don't know how to qoute)

Lol buddasak "fandangled"

Anyway, i gotta agree with buddasak, no matter how insane the pc graphics card industry gets (**512 mb video cards**), eventually there will be programs that need the power so if these cards come out within in 2-3 years i won't get them but in 5-10 years time i think that everyone woul have 512 mb cards or even 1024 cards (no matter how INSANE that sounds)

just my $0.02

dude Id's cheif (whatshisname) replied to a question that the best video card to play doom on hasnt come out yet. he was refering to the 512 cards. oh and btw i read somewhere that current tech. is reaching its thermal limits so by the end of the decade they wil lprobably replace silicon with something like artificial diamonds or something. yeah i know, sounds way out there.

sorry cant provide links to these references.
