I read a comaprison review of the x800 and the 6800 and the 6800 came out on top ONLY if it was the fast memory version (DDR3 I think anandtech called it). Anyone who has ordered know this info yet?

Well, the XPS2 in now up, and that features the Ultra 6800. Aaargh! Anyone able to let us know the difference?

Also, I'm thinking about moving from my 9100 to the 9300. Will a) the memory be interchangeable and b) will I be able to use my modular 40gb HD (that fits into the DVD/CD slot)?

Thanks for any answers

Yeah it's kind of confusing, and the tech specs on Dell's site don't help much either.

I was debating which machine to get, the Sager 9860 or the Dell XPS2 (been waiting for it to be released). I'd sure like the Dell to have the DDR3 version, but even if it doesn't I really want the enhanced battery life of the Pentium M since I travel a lot.

Rumours have been the the 9300 will have the GDDR3 card. Of course we won't know 100% until someone has one in their hands but...

The 6800 Ultra is supposedly a 16pipe version of the Rev2Go6800. It has benched 12,000+ in 3d03 according to a Japanese screenshot posted on this site.

Cheers

It is DDR - 300MHz memory. Here is the excerpt from dell site :

Graphics Card Learn More

ATI® MoblilityTM RADEON® X300 video controller with 64 MB of DDR video memory, PCI-Express x16

ATI® MoblilityTM RADEON® X300 video controller with 128 MB of DDR video memory, PCI-Express x16

NVIDIA® GeforceTM 6800 Go video controller with 256 MB of DDR video memory, PCI-Express x16

Microsoft® DirectX® 9.0 support

Dual Independent display support.

Alas! Why this is happening again and again ?

JimBob, your memory will not work in the new 9300 as it uses DDR2. But the 40GB HDD you have for the module DVD/CDRW drive will work as they have not changed speck on their "d-bay" or whatever they call it.

I ordered mine today and asked the salesperson very clearly about the 6800 ddr.

He checked for a minute or so and replied.......look in sig........

Oh well, I'll wait until the DDR3 version then. Shame that....

Edit: Just seen the post above! Woo hoo! That card, I believe, beats the X800

Check the post above you

I wouldn't put too much store in the accuracy of Dells specs on the site, I don't think they are actually specifying what type of memory is used. Take a look at the XPS2 specs, they do not specify GDDR3 either and that card definitely has it.

Also JimBob, you're memory is actually supported by the chipset used in the 9300, but you won't be able to mix ddr and ddr2 memory.

Cheers

You beat me to it

Noids,

Does that mean I can throw away the 512mb that comes as standard with the 9300 and use my 9100's 1MB with no problems? Will it slow the system down compared to DDR2 memory?

Cheers

no the ddr memories dont fit in the ddr2 sockets even if the chipset support them.

I've just specced up a machine, and was told it was the DDR2 card (not 3)

The trouble was the salesperson didn't know much about this, and told me that only "astronomers and the like" use DDR3 cards! They told me the DDR 3 is not out anytiome soon!

Anyhoo, I'm still no nearer knowing which version I'd get!!!!

1MB would run really slow. Now 1GB wouldn't be bad But as said, it will not work in the motherboard.

Yes, well, i guess we will have to wait for more specific specsheets to know for sure but if that salesdude lied to me im gonna be mad.

Anyhow, im buing this lappy, cant wait any longer, im actually sure i wouldnt notice any difference from ddr2/ddr3 if i didnt run benchies.

Merry xmas to me in e few weeks.

Hmm, found this on a German site, can someone translate?

Mal wieder neue Infos zum Dell Inspirom 9300:

Erscheinungstermin wahrscheinlich der 24.02.2005
Zur Graka: vermutlich Nvidia 6800go MIT GDDR3 ))))

Of course its GDDR3, they can't run a 6800 U with DDR 2, its not designed around it. Not to mention DDR2 would create a lot more heat, something dell would not like.

Umm, well, its not an ultra.....if thats what u mean with 6800 u....

I for one sure as hell hope its ddr3, otherwise Dell has lied to me today. Would be nice to find better tech specs though....

Same difference. One is a 12 pipe core the other is 16 but both use the same memory controller.

Edit: Correction, if its a 128 bit part then it will have the DDR apparently. Just so you know the difference, you will have half the peak bandwidth if the inspiron 9300 is coupled with a 128 bit 6800. Hopefully this isn't the case since it would suck for people like you that bought one but if Dell told you its GDDR3 then you should be ok.

The ultra only has 12pipes. It just has faster memory.
