Part 9. Testing screen quality

The screen quailty in a word is amazing. I haven't seen any dead pixels (though I haven't run an LCD Analyzer yet). Also the view angles are incredable.

Here is a (poor) movie of the 3DMark2001 that I ran (thanks Jawz for the server space).
Here is a movie of moving around the screen to demonstrate screen quality.

Apologies for the quality of the video...I'm using a Sony Clie and I'm not a videographer . BTW the creaking sound you hear is the plastic flexing because I'm using one hand (trying to keep it out of the video) off center to move such a large screen around. I wouldn't normally do this. Also as Adam pointed out the mic has an incredable gain so the sound is a bit more disturbing in the video than in real life.

Re: Part 9. Testing screen quality

Danm - thats a nice looking screen - very sharp - the viewing angles are good (not as good as the Wide Angles UXGA) but pretty nice - You are making it very difficult for me to pick the 5680 ayasin

Part 10. The machine noise

The 8890 is amazingly quite. In order to get the following sound I kept having to wait for my Inspiron 8000 to spin it's fans down because they drowned out the noise the Sager was making.

Here is the ambiant noise in my office.
Here is the machine booting up. This is the eqivilant of putting your head right against the machine as it boots.
Here is me speaking over the machine noise.

Try putting a 6" nail in it. That should stop the play.

Seriously though that can be annoying.

Sidenote

Would anyone be willing to host some of these movies for me...they are kinda large and I don't want to burn all my bandwidth on them.

Nice review. Kinda neet to see it fron the order to recipt and usege. It is really nice to see the details such as packing. Thanks for shareing and spending the time to do this.

It keeps me busy while I wait for my system to be delivered. It has been on a little vacation and is sitting with Adam and Co. at the moment. If someone at PCTorque could give my laptop a hug for me and tell it it is on its way to a nice home I would be appriciate it.

Keyboard moving

Asayin,

I received my 8890 on Wednesday. The first time I used the keyboard I didn't notice anything unusual, but this morning wen I used the number pad for the first time the keyboard moved downward as you described. I really don't recall this happening Wednesday night and I know I used the numb pad. I didn't notice it on the left side but definitely on the right whenever I use any keys on the numb pad. It's a little disturbing. Kind of a strange feel, particularly since the main part of the keyboard feels rock solid. It's as if something on the right is not snapped in or connected properly. Otherwise, the machine feels and displays pretty nice so far, no other hangups.

Adam,
I am not at the machine right now but I'll check the tabs when I get home.

I also don't like touchpads at all guys, but this one is the best I've ever tried. I haven't set a mouse up yet because I haven't loaded any games yet. I'll probably do that tonight, but I really had no problems with the touchpad browsing, e-mail, Word, Excel, those sorts of things.

Part 11. The TV Tuner

The TV tuner works very well. I was able to hook up the coax cable to a little adapter that allows it to plug into the back of the Sager in a few seconds. I was initially concerned about the connection breaking but it feels quite solid. The picture quality is excellent as long as you don't go crazy and play it full screen. There are 4 sizes other than full screen:
240x180
320x240
640x480
720x480
They all look equally good although if you don't have a perfect signal smaller sizes are much more forgiving than larger sizes. The default size that comes up is 320x240.

Here is a movie of the TV running
Here is a movie of the extended controls

The program has a stay on top feature that's nice. I haven't been able to get recording to work yet. Every time I click record the program crashes. I'll try to figure out what's going on and post a clip from the recorder if possible.

Edit:

The TV tuner program has a screen capture facility. Here is a screen capture. Also the movie links are now fixed.

ayasin--How about some benchmarks? 3dmark 2001 and 03. I noticed on one of your short videos that you had run 01 but you did not say what the score was. Thanks

What adaptor did you use to do this? I'm having problems with getting my tv-tuner to work with the coax cable going into my puter.

Here is a pic of the adapter.

You should be able to find this in the bag containing your remote control, the batteries and the TV Studio CD-ROM.

I got 15026 I believe. A little low but I hadn't done any tweaking and was running lots of background processes. The reason that didn't post any benchmarks is that Adam already did a pretty comprehensive job of that. As I install more programs and run some more benchmarks I'll post the results here .
