Huh? HP, are you there? This PC's been "coming soon" for almost a month now...

late March / Early April???????

You are number 3 in a queue of 3. Thank you for your patience.
You are connected with HP's US Chat Service. My name is Chris. How may I help you today?
you: Hello. I am interested in purchasing an hp nc8230 laptop, I was informed earlier by HP that it would be available on the 24th. the website still says "coming soon". Do you have any update on that model?
you: Thanks.
Chris: Let me connect you with a laptop specialist. I cover printers.
you: Oh ok. Thanks.
Chris: It has been pushed back to late March/early April. That is our latest update.
you: Ok. I guess I should not wait for it then. Will there be a consumer version of that laptop (15.4" Centrino w WUXGA screen) released any earlier?
Chris: We support the business line, if you'd like to take a look at our current consumer models, they are listed at hpshopping.com.
Chris: The nx7010 may interest you on our business side.
you: Ok. I will look at that then. Thanks for your help.

They must have either (1) real technical problems, (2) they started development of the laptop too late (and it's just got out of the lab and is not in production), and/or (3) they don't get parts from subcontractors. March/April is really late, but I hope it comes out perfect by then.

What do you think is the case?

They are launching a new "platform" with these new laptops, i.e. interchangeable & inter-operable optical drives, batteries, docking stations etc. that work between different laptops (12.1 to 15.4). This may be a systemic issue that is associated with the new platform.

Also, have you seen any x600 laptops out there? Acer 8104 (I think?) uses x700, dell 6000 uses x300, IBMT43 etc. have no dedicated graphics models out yet, this could very well be an issue with the x600 graphics board which is the only option with the nc8230.

Or it may be a combination of the two...

Dell Latitude D810 uses x600. HP's home zd8000 uses x600. HP's other DTR models (go to hp.com and their business notebooks section) use X600 and x300.

But quite frankly there are too many models using x300 and hardly any using x700 (one might even forget x800 except for the boutique labels)

It's sad. I really thought HP and Dell would jump to get out some new models to steal some business from IBM (after the sale to Lenovo), but they appear to be blowing it big time. Obviously, the departure of Fioria didn't make for good timing and this could be temporary loss of focus due to her departure. All I can say is it better be good when it gets out, but I think a lot of people have already made their choice, if not their purchase. I've got a Dell D610 and I'm loving it! This is much better than I ever expected; especially after buying a M60 a year and a half ago and hating it.
