Sounds like the 9100/XPS are out of date now

Thread Starter
Hi. Ehm . Is the 9100 outdated now since the XPS2 has been released now. It still seems that the procesor on the 9100 is much better. But The graphics card is suposebly worse.

hmm the price for the 9100 is still more then the price for the XPS2. When are they gonna release a new graphics card for 9100. Are the graphics cards of XPS2's identical to 9100. Would it possible to stick them into our system?

yes the 9100/XPS is outdated, the processor in the XPS2 is actually better in a lot of things that the regular p4's. THe newest card for the 9100/XPS is the MR9800 256MB which would be owned byt the Nvidia GF6800 Ultra GO. No you cannont take a vid card out from the XPS2 and put it into a 9100/XPS the XPS2 uses a totally different architecure.

As far as price, what's on the dell site for base prices is not a fair comparision especially between XPS and XPS2. The XPS2 has many base options that are less than the XPS. I was surprised when i spec's out a new XPS2, for fun, and found no wireless card, only 512ram, and the slower HD were all standard. Excuse me?

Is your/my i9100 outdated? Depends on how you look at it. If you bought a Ford Truck last year and then a new model came out this year, does that mean your's is outdated? No. Not in the sense that it's any less valuable or can do less work.

I think what Dell did with the XPS2 was make another i9100 style of a highly configurable high-end pc and started the options on the low side. In other words, while we know the i9100 and the XPS are virtually the same, the XPS2 can have the options of the lower i9100 and highest XPS - give or take a video card and a screen.

Finally, again, we are seeing the dominance of the 17" notebook. Call it what you want, but I'm thinking there are less and less notebooks that are portable and many that are desktop replacements not because of weight but because of size.

Outdated, definatly yes.
Useless, definatly NOT.

Bleeding edge = no
Extreame machine = yes

Your 9100/XPS machines still post the same 3Dmark scores as they did yesterday. And can play all the same games as they did before. I doubt there will be any games created in the next 3 years that you CANT play with a MR9800 or even a MR9700.

Just my 2cts.
I amlost purchased an i9200. Had i done so I would have been very content for 4 years. As it is, I am now very gleefull at the cost of an extra $800ish.

I am upgrading my proc to a 3.4 EE, and a larger hdd. While they have a faster grphx card, the proc will still own them. But yeah XPS Gen 1 had its time and now its time for the next gen to take over.
hey sury, why are you wasting your money on an EE? get a reg 3.4, EE's don't improve performance THAT much.

that was centrino not mobile processors! know what you saying !

if dell uses the new 770s that means it is faster than p4s
post #10 of 33
Sorry, you're really hated centrino. But Intel® Pentium® M 770 Processor is a Centrino (of new generation) - it's not P4M. Am I wrong?

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A CENTRINO PROCESSOR!!!!!

ONLY Intel® CentrinoTM Mobile Technology

Centrino mobile technology includes the following three components:
Intel® Pentium® M Processor
Intel 855 chipset family
Intel PRO/Wireless network connection

Here are the processors Intel makes that go into Notebooks.
Intel® Notebook Processors
Intel® Pentium® M Processor
Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor supporting Hyper-Threading Technology
Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor
Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor-M
Intel® Celeron® M Processor
Mobile Intel® Celeron® Processor

Yes INTEL marketing wants to confuse you. But this has been posted around here alot.

lol
Havent ya seen the commerical... "Only wireless internet with mobile centrino techonlogy".... and then you see the PM sticker on the PC

The P4 EE is faster and cooler than what I currently have. Considering the newer EEs are out and I dont want anything to do with them since they have Prescott cores, I think the 3.4 EE Socket 478 will drop in price in a month or 2 and that should give me enough time to get the moolah I need to buy it. I am graduating in that time period as well and am hoping for some cash haha

The price you'll be spending to buy an EE ($1k?), you could sell your XPS and use that money to buy an XPS2.

I agree. The cost to performance ratio is not good when it comes to p4 ee. Its not worth it.
that is a good point. u think i should attempt to sell my xps? is that what you guys would recommend?
well that depends on what you want to get or do. I was seriously considering selling my 9100 and getting a 9300, but after seeing the dual core solutions that are right around the corner I have decided to wait. Unless you need 75FPS in Halo etc. keep your XPS it will serve you well for a good while to come.
