Dell's latest notebook release, the Dell Inspiron 9300, is full of firsts—well, firsts for Dell anyway. Most noticeably, Dell is finally joining the ranks of manufacturers that offer PVR notebooks. The company is offering Microsoft's Media Center 2005 with an optional external USB TV Tuner ($199) for the first time. Dell is also debuting Dell Media Direct, its own version of a "Quick On" DVD/CD audio player that will play without the need to boot into the operating system. Dell Media Direct will also work from hibernate/suspend mode.

The Inspiron will have an Arctic silver exterior with DVD player controls on the front panel. If you don't like the Artic silver look, you can always opt for a different "snap on" cover. You can choose from Mediterranean Blue, Cherry Burlwood, Charcoal Leather, or Carbon Fiber, which is dark black and tough-looking. The notebook's 17-inch widescreen display is sharper thanks to Dell's new Truelife technology. (Not to be confused with its UltraSharp screen, which has the antiglare coating that gives it the non-glossy look.) The new screens will brighter and clearer by ridding the anti-glare coating.

The engine driving the Inspiron 9300 will be a combination of Intel's new Centrino components and include a Pentium M processor, DDR2 RAM, and the option of choosing either the Mobility ATI Radeon X300 (64 to 128 MB) or the more powerful Nvidia GeForce Go 6800 (256MB). The 9300 will also offer a whopping six USB ports and an SD slot. Systems will be available in mid-March and will start at $1,599.

Nice find. I knew there had to be something to replace the 9200 other than the XPS2. Hope they don't force media center on you though.

I expect the Media Center to be an option, just like on the XPS2.

By the way, has anybody been posting about the newer line of 700m? By the looks of things, I would expect a 533 FSB version of the 700m, since it is already optioned in the Small Business side of the house under the Latitude Line.
