if you got the money.. go with the 7700. It just performs better and has a nicer screen.

The size isnt much different and the technology is more to date with the 7700. The 7700 is a powerhouse with newer technology.

7700 without a doubt I just love mine and wouldnt trade it for anything....And the 7700 will last you longer with all of the upgradable options..

I recently got a 5500 and love it. It's plenty fast for me (I use it for games, office, and classroom stuff). I carry mine to class most of the week. If I turn the GPU down, I can get 1.5-2 hrs on the battery. As far as screens go, I get comments on the clarity of the 5500 screen all the time.

The size is different-the 7700 is 2inches wider, a half an inch thicker, and has a starting weight (w/o battery) of 2.5 lbs more. The 7700 is a beast. Also, the 7700 is quite a bit more expensive.

I think the 7700 is a badass comp., but I couldn't justify spending that much money. For what I need, the 5500 delivers on flawlessly.

You'll enjoy either one---just depends on how high performance you need it.

look at the dell XPS 2.
its pretty wicked.
uses centrino 2.0ghz cpu
intel p915 chip
17"Wide UXGA screen
nvidia GoForce 6800 256mb.

compatible to the 7700 (but doean't have the dual optical or dual drive raid option).

or look at the sager with the intel 600 series 64Bit processor.
future proofing your laptop.

just a thought.
i have a 5500. it's great. but i'm drooling over the xps 2

By the looks of it, this XPS2 is effin' saweet. It isn't ASS ugly like the previous gen. The 9300 is looking pretty nice as well. I'll have to hold of on AW to see how things pan out, until i Absolutly have to buy

The logical AW progression would be to release a new iteration of the Area-51 using the new 915 chipset, change the processor to the fastest Pentium M and stack it up with 533Mhz RAM. Add the top of the line Nvidia graphics card and the result (because AW uses better quality parts and tunes everything better) will literally destroy any Dell.

You do have a great point, and I believe what you say. Your reasoning is one reason why I'm glad I'm not going to be making a purchase untill August

7700 is a powerfull no holds barred work horse. it will run and do anything . but if you dont want or need all that power the 5500 would do you fine. as far as the dell goes ..well its a dell lol. no but for real it only has a 2ghz chip. thats 1200 mhz slower then the 7700 with the 3.6. 1200 mhz is alot of extra power.

ty

yeah guys thanks for the advice, i really just need a decent gaming notebook, and the only reason i considered the 5500 was because of the extreme edition pentium offered with it and the portability factor. I mean, either one can play all games on offer know right? yeah... and im not gonna be a little pussy about the weight on the 7700, its prolly not that bad. But do you guys think either is great for games? Whats better about each, apart from size and hard drive configuration.

also what do you think, ATI or Nvidia graphics card?

I disagree with this statement. Its a Mobile Proc., and the L2 cache is huge. It can compete with the 3.6 the 7700 has.

NVIDIA graphic cards are the best !!!!! go with NVIDIA 6800 Go you wont regret it !!!!!!!!!
I wanted to switch to the NVidia, but ended up staying with the ATI (I called about three times). Right now the ATI X800 is behind the 6800 Go, but a new driver revision could change that.

I know for a fact that if you purchase the 7700, you'll have the ability to get a video card upgrade any time you wish. My advice would be to go with the company that you like the most.

my research led me from the xps to the alienware, i like the 3.6, i'm not going to use my comp on the go much, but i like the ease of portability. personally i feel alienware offeres more overhead for performance right now. more overhead = greater longevity. add in the fact that it's pretty swappable and you have a miniature desktop. the ddr3 6800 go and the ati are both rock solid cards so it really comes down to preference, with the current advantage going to nvidia. i've got a 19 inch sun monitor and a keyboard and mouse waiting for the 7700.
