non-swappable gpus in XPS2 and no ATI gpu planned

well i spoke w/ a couple of sales reps and a tech and they all told me the same thing. but of course they all smoke the same company dope.

granted this is what they said about the 9100/XPS and the mr9800, but i still don't like the idea of not being able to swap gpus out like the clevo clones.

not having a comparable mx800 xt/pro kinda sucks too.

So it isn't MXM? Boo hiss, indeed. Boo hiss.

It might be MXM, but that doesn't make it swapable. You've got form factor, power, and thermals to worry about in a lappy. You simply won't see many swappable GPUs in laptops.

I thought I read somewhere on here a quote that said it was upgradeable. I can't find it now though.

It looks like a swapable card to me, Anyone else notice that it has around 2~3 times as much cooling as the CPU? That huge metal plate with 2 Heatpipes, it's own fan, and shared cooling from the CPU fan is to cool this GPU, thats sick. Having said that Im not sure that ATI has a part you would want to swap this out for, yes the X800 by rumor would use less than 1/2 as much power, but the benchmarks for the laptop as is are amazing.

well i would've liked to see an ati option. the x800 xt pe and 6800u offers comparable performance but the x800 uses less power and runs cooler. look at the m9800. it can be overclocked to the same extent as the mx800 and i've never problems w/ heat at all. in fact the fans don't run that often.

I think overall this is the better solution than the X800 even if it runs hotter and consumes more power. The reason is that it has SM 3.0 support so its a better long term investment for a laptop. Now if it were a desktop, I'd pick an X800XT PE over a 6800U (like I already did) since I can easily replace it with the next ATi part when SM 3.0 games are out in full force.

From dell's press release:

Dedicated support queue for XPS customers and a graphics upgrade path. Dell's technology promise to provide customer with an optional graphics upgrade if a new graphics card is introduced.

yeah i saw that too, but like i said those sales and tech people are often smoking too much of the company dope.

but if you look at those photos above, upgrading is no simple task. i really would have liked it if they designed the chassis similar to the clevos. you know "open bottom panel, remove heatsink, remove gpu".

I wonder what that tape looking stuff is. I'm guessing it's some type of thermal pad but I've never seen anything like it.

The sales reps just want to sell laptops... if you decide to wait for an upgrade, it comes (right) off their salary. Before you ask them, begin your question with "I am buying this anyway, but I was just wondering..." and you might get a different reply.

actually that's pretty much how i started... "i want to order an xps2 today but i have a question...."
Either way you go at it, they will try to tell you what they think you need to hear to make a purchase now, so no telling if what they say is true. Dell has always had an outward policy of saying they do not support video upgrades, however they often do have the parts for it especially with top end models.
