No sales tax for us Oregonians. Helped me justify paying for the 2MB of ram along with a couple hundred in additional discounting.

That's a lot of laptop! I hope for that price they give you the good-looking topless girl techs for the at-home service
post #25 of 32
I would even pay more if the techs were 'hot' topless girls.

Reminds me of when I lived in Maine... I never went there but there was a topless doughnut shop.

It's a business expense... I have the choice of spending my company money on hardware or giving it to the government as income tax. hmmmmmmm... I say spend it on hardware

Sold my good old lappy i8500 for £550.00 - p4-m 2 GHz, WSGA+ LCD, 1 GB RAM, 40 GB HDD, 1450 Dual Wireless card, DVD/CD-Writer combo,XP home.

I have decided to get my XPS2 from US in April. For filling the gap, today I've bought Latitute x300 - 1.4 GHz PM, 640 MB RAM, intel pro 2200 wireless,40GB HDD, DVD ROM - for £833.00 from Dell outlet(Refurbished).

How's the deal chaps?

Hi guys, just signed up to this great resource of info about notebooks.

The Inspiron 9300 was released here in the UK a few days ago and I decided to use my buying power to see if I could get a good discount from Dell. I called their sales line and spoke with an Indian lady, to whom I gave my customer number and informed her that I have spent over £200,000 with Dell over the past year and if she can do me a special price.

After spending 35 minutes on the phone trying to negotiate with her, she came up with a quote for £2038 for the following spec:

P-M 2.12
WUXGA True Life Display, 1920 x 1200
512MB
256MB Nvidia 6800
80GB 5400RPM
802.11 b/g
9 cell secondary battery
Bluetooth
3 years warranty inc. accidental damage

Anyhow, I kindly reminded her of my annual spending but the best offer she could give me was £1980 inc. delivery and VAT.

I told her to send me the quote and I would think about it, and she called back 10 minutes later pestering me to buy it.

Anyhow, I specced up an XPS2 from the US store and it came to £1600 fully loaded with lots of extras. I could use a mail forwarder like http://www.myus.com where shipping to the UK would be maybe $100 via FedEx Express and it would still work out lots cheaper for a much better spec.

Has anyone ever used a mail forwarded from the US to the UK, or managed to negotiate a good discount with Dell UK? I got the feeling that the measly £50 discount she offered was the regular one they offered to most customers if they were wavering about ordering something, she didn't even go to her supervisor to verify the discount.

Have you calculated the VAT amount which will be charged by the mailing company?

They don't charge VAT - you only get charged VAT if Customs & Excise intercept your parcel and the price is declared. What you can do is mark the package as a warranty repair item with a declared value of $0 and then it will go through customs with no fees to pay.

Do you trust some 3rd party company to handle your new laptop? I sure as hell wouldn't. I'd rather pay extra and know the laptop was coming straight to me rather than some shady company on the net promising mail forwarding.

Sorry, can't help you out on the mail forwarding deal, but I would be very interested to see how you go if you do organise it. Would there be any other concerns with using a laptop built for the US market in either the UK or Australia etc? We would obviously need to use a different power adaptor, but all the software is the same and functional? Does dell have any options for international warranties? When you are on the order page with Dell, they ask you to declare if you are planning on exporting the computer. Why is this?

Sorry for all the questions, but I really want an XPS2 and I am a little nervous at possibly having to order from the US.

Cheers
