New Dell XPS 2! 1920x1200 screen!

OK, this is getting rediculous. Even the new Dell gaming laptop XPS 2 (see link below) has a 1920 by 1200 screen. Clevo better get on the ball ASAP!

if these benchmark tests are real, Clevo'd better step up to the challenge because the XPS 2 is going to sell quickly among the gamers. I am wondering how much the new video card helps because a pentium M 2.13 GHz is not that much ahead of a pentium 4 3.8 GHz in term of performance, am I correct?

i think a pentium m 2.13 is about the same as a p4 3.4 ish when it comes to gaming but i could be wrong...

Roughly but with really crappy floating performance. Also the new Dell XPS2 has a glossy screen, apparently made by Samsung and not the previously twinkly version from before. I'd be buying the XPS2 if it wasn't for the P-M. Good for gamers, not good for 3d rendering.

their chassis is crappy

well...the D900T has the WUXGA on the way sometime in March. It will probably be here before teh Dell ships with one. It will probably also be the same 1 as the Dell. It is avialable for order from Hypersonic/Eurocom/Voodoo

Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it.

One way or another, I hope it's soon.

Wow...9lbs...

I think the XPS 2 is looking great; its mobile and it blows away in gaming. I just wish I could find battery life somewhere...

PC Mag review benched the battery at 2hrs 13mins.

Cheers

Looks damn nice, but not too keen on the price.... Plus I don't think Dell will release it here in Australia, cos we didn't get the XPS Gen1.

It looks nice, and I'd almost be tempted to buy it .. but Dell's laptops usually ... umm ... you know ... have a build quality of -3
post #12 of 110
well the xps2 weighs about 2/3 of what the clevo 900 weighs.. I suppose you can use the extra 4lbs to improve the build quality of the dell? the xps2 is going to be the gamer“s notebook for some time, especially when they cost about the same as sager 9860 but weighing less and having 2x battery life..

Couple of questions. First, does it have upgraedable graphics? I'm assuming yes. And second, will this model be upgradeable to a 64 bit "M" processor if and when it comes out. I'm guessing no. That said, it wont have much "future-proofing" going for it. BTW benchmarks!!!! http://www.tomshardware.com/mobile/...#direct_x9_halo

I don't think Intel has even roadmapped a 64 bit 'M' processor. Yonah seems to be dual core but not 64. In any case I doubt it would be upgradeable, Dothan to Sonoma isn't, and that would be a much bigger leap.

As for Australia, we couldn't get the XPS, but you could get the 9100 with the ATI9800. I imagine something similar might happen with the 9300.

I have to say it still looks cheap and butt ugly though.

Dell is the reverse of AlienSnare. They always claim not to support upgradeable graphics, but often support it. There are already 4 different graphics configurations available on the 9300/XPS2 model. (3 cards, 1 with 2 different memory configurations)

Well, the 9860 should still blow away the XPS2 with RAID since I think the XPS only allows a single drive. Eventually the 9860 will have the NVIDIA Ultra as well, won't it? Or does the XPS2 somehow make the card perform better than it would on the 9860? I haven't read the whole review on it...

The battery life on the XPS2 is great though (thanks for the tip btw, Noids..: With two batteries I imagine you'd be able to get three to four hours...on a DTR that's amazing! I don't do number crunching with my computer (just text, web and gaming) so this looks really, really good.

On 64 bit prccessors...by the time 64 bit applications come out and warrant a change to 64 bit, it'll be time for you to change your laptop again anyway. I wouldn't worry about it. If you really really feel you need a 64 bit cpu just get an amd. A PCI-e AMD is bound to be on the way...

Sorry pplepiew - RAID makes almost no difference in performance at all.

The Dell chassis is quite crappy. An even worse sin, however, is not providing a number keypad - come on - the real estate is there - use it!

And for those of us who need real processing cycles, the Pentium-M just doesn;t cut the mustard.

Like a previous poster said - 'Hey Clevo - Wake up!'

Doesn't it? Then why does the 5400rpm SATA RAID get better benchmarks then the 7200rom ATA RAID in the 9860 review (both of which I presumed got better benchmarks than non-RAID)?

I don't see anything wrong with the chassis but I hadn't noticed the lack of a keypad though, that's a big downer...

Hmmm, that's a desktop review though where 10K rpm HDs are accessible. I'm not sure it'd be the same with laptops though I could be wrong.

Btw, I also haven't spotted a TV tuner on the XPS2...
