*deep breath* *sigh*

So.....I just got off the phone with customer service....

I ordered XP Home and wanted to change it to XP Media Center Edition.
I tried to change on-line and was told they would have to cancel my order and re issue. This would mean I would loose my April 8th shipping date.
Current dates given out are April 11th.
I did not want to loose 3 days for a single item change so I called Customer Service.
After traveling down the wrong phone tree once and not being able to climb back up it, I hung up and tried again. This time I pressed the correct buttons to get where I wanted. "Change a Current Order".
So....after a 30min wait I got to talk to someone who had a thick accent. I would guess Indian. But that does not mean he was in India. He told me the same thing. I would have to cancel the order and reissue to make any changes. I took a breath and figured 3 days more wait (April 8th to 11th) will be ok since its so far out anyway I guess Ill do it.
So I give him the ok. He comes back 3 minutes later and says. Here is your new order number. Your new shipping date is April 14th. 14th!!!!! Why?
He said that was the best he could do. He also said that was a preliminary date and it could change after there is approval again from my credit card.
I pondered what to do. He already posted the new transaction to my card so there was not much choice. I told him I could cancel the whole thing and get an April 11th date on the website now. He said that it would take 6 to 12 hours after a cancel to release the funds from my card. I just checked and I don’t have enough to buy two out right. So I took his dated. Not much choice.

So now....I still see April 11th date shipping date on the site.
My new order is still in “Order Processing” and says Estimate ship date of April 14th.

Questions:
1. Could the ship date drop down to the 11th when it moves to Pre-production as soon as they confirm the card?
2. Should I cancel the whole thing and try again tomorrow to get an April 11th date?

3. If I do I am afraid that it will jump to the 14th anyway, why else would he have given me an April 14th date?

WARNING: GET YOUR ORDER RIGHT THE FIRST TIME OR BE PREPAIRED TO LOOSE SHIPPING DATE

(to self:…..its only 6 more days….its only 6 more days…..its only 6 more days)

The preliminary ship date they give you is meaningless. They usually just add 30 days to your order date, but in the case of the XPS2, it looks like they simply add 6 weeks.

As your build progresses, you'll get a more accurate picture of your ship date. It'll probably be the same as the rest of the recent orders, but who knows.

Dell likes to under-promise and over-deliver. It's a standard "trick" to thrill the customer. The initial ship date estimate is usually *very* pessimistic.

Thanks,
I hope so.
I was just frazzled from the phone call and needed to vent.

Durring the call I asked "Why is the ship date so far out? Dell has a hold on my money and will get it as soon as it ships, why dont they build and ship sooner?"
His reply "XPS2 is still in pre-sales stage. Dell is waiting on XPS (gen 1) interest to drop before selling the XPS2"
Ill let you all draw your own conclusions to that one before I comment....

That's actually why I ordered. These are simply pre-orders. Just a way to establish a place in line for one when they actually start shipping. I'm still not sure I want to spend a couple grand on some flashing LEDs, but I figured I might as well get in line.

In the meantime, I'll see if I can wire up some LEDs to my 9200. I wouldn't be surprised if the XPS2 actually kicks off a mini-industry in laptop mod kits.

When the dates get you down, just remember that Dell started selling the XPS2 19 days before we even expected it. Everyone was expecting it on March 15th.
It's a half glass full kinda outlook

To further add to the confusion, looks like a number of Canadian XPS2 purchasers were given a ship date of March 15th!?!

This just in from Dell Customer service.
I wasnt even all that rude. Just include text of some problems i had and my experinece on the phone and that the customer chat did not work twice.
I got an e-mail with customer chat containing my question and a service guy saying "You have not responded in one minute so i am hanging up" Why he bothered to e-mail me the text of the conversation with out even answering the question is beyond me.

Bottom line here: I think dell knows they have Customer service issues. So they thow another form letter with money in it at people to shut them up. I made/saved $75 from one e-mail. But they still never answered my question about the XPS2 and a TV tuner. (The guy i talked to on the phone thought it was just an optional accessory available from the accessorys area. )
While dell customer service leave something to be desired they do atleaset try to "make it right".

Note: He is a little confused and thinks i still need to make a change to the order. I already changed it which is what caused the jump in date which is what the basis of my question was. Oh well. Ill just hunker down for a long drawn out "hurry up and get here already" wait......I have waited this long(christmas). Mabe they will still bump up the date.

Order Date / Ship Date

Just pulled the trigger on one of these bad boys. Cancelled my order for the HP ZD8000. Here is my order date, ship date:

Order Date: 2/2705
Estimated Ship Date: Monday, April 11, 2005
post #30 of 64
yup, I ordered mine Sat night, will ship on or before April 8th.

I fully pimped this bad boy out...whatever hardware option they offered, I took.

I can't wait!
what is aafes? If that's military, maybe those orders get pushed to the front.
Yes, it's the military version of Walmart (with a monopoly).

Stands for something like American Armed Forces Exchange Service or some such.

Usually has great prices and tax free, but you have to be military to use them.

Star account?
"Star Account" is a AAFES credit card your first purchase is 10% off, guess they didn't think too many people would spend $2400.00 on their first purchase.
Well all you have to do is keep paying the minimum balance and they'll make their money back and lots more.
April 11th for me as well.

It's gonna be an agonizing 6 weeks...
"Well all you have to do is keep paying the minimum balance and they'll make their money back and lots more. "

Thats the trick, you have to have it paid for before you buy.
Gratz to all that have joined in the plunge on this large actually its the 3rd largest investment of mine after house and car.

So this morning my shipping dated moved from April 14th to April 12th as my machine once again switched from "Order Processing" to "PreProduction" which is nice. And as a bonus my shipping method switched from "3-5 Day ground" to "Next Day". That makes the actually date it should be in my hands almost the same as when I had April 8th shipping.

I have to say. Dell Customer Care may not know how to answer a seemingly simple question, but the defiantly 'try' to please. I am again smiling inside about my purchase.

@ LeeU and all military that ordered through aafes

Did aafes send you another email stating your ship date or can you actually go on dell's website and see the status of your order?

It's getting me worried that I can't use the link that tells me the status of my order on dell's site. Sure I like the fact that aafes sent me an update giving me a target ship date of March 12th, but I'd rather hear that from the manufacturer, not the reseller.

I was about to have my acer 8104 shipped out today, but when the XPS Gen 2 came out, I immeadiately cancelled my order in favor of this beast. Since I'll be in Iraq for a year and a half, I need something that could keep up with current and future 3D games. I leave March 25th for training, so I was really happy with that preliminary ship date aafes gave me. I just hope they didn't mess up my order with Dell and delay it.
