USB Or Firewire External Drive?

Thread Starter
I currently have a USB 2 external drive and was wondering if I should consider "upgrading" to an firewire based external drive? I know the 480 Mbs and 400 Mbs speeds, but peeps still say that Firewire is faster. Would it be worth the 65 dollars to get a new external drive case? Or is USB 2 fast enugh to use to export/render/ and use as a scratch disk for video editing?

Go with Firewire 800 if you can, that is MUCH faster.

Other than that it is six of one half dozen of the other, go with whichever will be more accessible for you, or better yet do both

They are both fine as long as you never plug the USB in through a hub! I had some awful experiences in losing data that I thought was backed-up fine (no way of knowing any differently until I actually needed the data). I thought that I could run a small array of external drives (I had 2 on the hub) on an adjacent shelf to my computer desk by running a hub to them and I suffered the consequences. I then went ahead and tried the drive with a straight connection to my computer and after verifying that the data was sound for a few months after, I have had the USB external for 6 mos now with no problems. Just a warning, and I am sure someone will say that they have 4-16 drives on 3 hubs and have never lost a byte of data, but this is my experience and I feel compelled to let people know of the possibilty of losing their data.

I'd save you money unless, like seablade said if your somputer has FireWire 800. And I think only the new Macs have 800.
