3 days of the 7700. Bad, bad, & good.

1.I have external surround speakers with a subwoofer. I plug them into the headphones plug and the sub doesn’t work.
I plugged them into my old laptop- sony vaio and HP desktop and they work fine.
I’ve uninstalled / installed the audio driver and nothing changes.

2.Hot key buttons. I installed a wireless keyboard and mouse and programmed the mail and internet buttons- and that works for the same on the laptop. I cannot get the Application button to do anything. I select application 1 from the taskbar, click on excel.exe and click open the screen goes away and nothing happens when I press the button. I’ve uninstalled / installed the drivers nothing changes.

3.I installed all my software; Macromedia Dreamweaver & Flash, MS Office 2003, Adobe Premiere, Image Genius, Canon scanner, Epson Printer, Sony- T-Mobile Air card, Trend Micro Internet Security. And everything was great. Then I tried to install Adobe Creative Suite Premium. (Which installed fine on my old laptop and desktop.) There are six programs and 2 CD’s. The first time it says everything has completely installed. So I check and only 2 programs installed in an Adobe file, I then look closer and only the folder was installed- it was empty in Illustrator. So I uninstall / reinstall- this time three different programs install but not completely. So then I try and install them on the second hard drive- Photoshop installs ( the main one I use) So I decide to manually install the others individually. It took a couple uninstall / reinstalls but I got them all installed. (And I followed Adobes instructions to uninstall Acrobat reader before installing anything) Then while using Photoshop- it said error not enough memory and closed. Twice. I tried using Acrobat and it wouldn’t save anything in a pdf. Then I open Word and the acrobat icons were there- tried to use them it crashed. Then I reopened Word and the acrobat icons were gone. Then they decided to show up once opened later and now it works. But now all the programs seem to be working okay.

4.I then analyzed the C: drive- it said I don’t need to defragment. I tried to analyze the D: drive (second HD) and it said f parameter not specified chkdsk is scheduled to run. I tried to analyze a few times and same answer. Later I tried it again and it analyzed. So now it works.

5.Meanwhile, while using the computer- it has crashed, shutdown, about two dozen times. While just typing. The AlienAutoSpy has come up about a dozen times too.

6.Looking around in the folders I noticed 3DMark05 v 1.1.0.0 was on the second drive. So I tried it. The first time it worked fine. Score of 2769. The second and fourth time it crashed and closed. The third time I scored a 2797. Then I tried the demo- both times it starts out great then acted like a CD skipping. I tried to install the patch and it says that 3DMark05 is not installed. Funny, since I’ve used it.

Just as I was typing this- it went to a blue screen said windows must shutdown- it restarted checked the HD’s.
A popup box said a file from the registry needed to be recovered. It was successful.

Then it said the system recovered from a serious error. (Which I have seen about a dozen times so far)

Again, IE crashed just now. Said something about add-ons about the flash player.

Again, crashed- I copied and pasted it into the forum ans was just typing Word crashed 3 times.

Again, AlienAutoSpy came up- IE crashed- so I have to copy and paste again to post this. (glad I wrote this in word and kept hitting save) All I have open is Word and Outlook and notebookforum page.

What should I do? Should I start all over and use the Respawn?

The rest…

1.The wireless network 108Mbps anywhere in my house - works excellent!

2.Card readers work excellent! CF and Memory stick.

3.No dead pixels!

4.Played a DVD movie- works – but the sound was really low. Definitely need external speakers or headphones. It did crash when I was skipping chapters too.

5.Camera works- but the quality is poor- why would you use it anyway? I have a Digital Camcorder if I want video.

6.DJ CD player works great. But again, until the sound is fixed will not use it.

7.The fans are okay- expected to be a little noisy

8.The battery life. I followed the directions to let the battery die completely and shutdown and it took 1 hour and 45 minutes. But don’t care about the life, I just keep it plugged in.

9.It took 7 weeks to get. It shipped on a Friday, received it on Tuesday. And I live in CA! Thanks to Richard.

Well that’s all I can think of right now. Need to post before it crashes again!

That sounds to me like a problem with your hard drive. You might want to break down and reformat it, if nothing's helping.
memory errors could mean bad memory, try reseating the ram...instructions on alienware website. bsod + crashes, i'm guessing either a bad install of xp or bad ram or both...just a shot in the dark. thankfully these are all fairly easy to fix.
You'd think they would have caught that in their "200 point inspection" that they supposedly do.

Well actually I forgot to tell you- They did find a bad memory card- Nero wouldn't install. So it was put back in line. Found a bad memory card. I know this from the error report sheet shipped with the pc.

I'd reinstall the OS. If you're still having problems after the fact, get with AW tech support on the phone. They'll help you from there.

The only thing i can answer for u is that the 3dmark 05 problem is that when u run it,the "cd skipping" ur talkin about is really jus the test runnin a tougher job on ur video card,if u run it again, u will notice that ur fps drop to about 1-10,if im not correct... hope this helps

Amber it's me Jim from Chicago. I have the same exact problems, don't do anything to it. I re-installed Windows and ran test after test, sent it in to Alienware and guess what? They could replicate the problem, go figure eh? That's what we paid for I guess! Tech support is in need of some TECH SUPPORT! I believe it may be a heat related issue. Does your system get really HOT? I've timed my lockups anywhere from 3 minutes up to somewhere in the neighborhood of 2-2 1/2 hours. Never more. I can't even get my video editing projects done. I asked to return it even within the 1st thirty days and guess what. Even for a clearly defective machine they wanted 15% which totalled $650-$700, just to return a defective machine. I'm beginning to see that Alienware SUX!

I paid for the 3 year on-site warranty and I get nothing but a person on the other side of the line I can't even UNDERSTAND! I mean English is still the FIRST LANGUAGE RIGHT?

I had to argue with them to keep there until they find/replicate the problem. So now I'm out of my work system. I'll never buy an Alienware again.

Funny thing is I never ever hear of the other "9860's" you know Sager and such, having these same problems. I did some research and one guy that had the same exact problems put Artic Silver on the CPU and that solved everyhting. You might want to try that or send it in and request that they do that, I guess. Let me know how it turns out okay? Buh Bye!

Works now! - except to print...

Well I too was on the phone - cell phone is all we use. For hours- different people all the time.

One person told me it was my Sony aircard from t-mobile (for internet) he said it wasn't compatible. That it was comfusing the built-in mini lan card. But I found that wasn't the case.

About that card: I had to fix that as well. I had to open the keyboard and reroute the antenna so both ends were attached to the card.

I ran the memory test they suggest from their FAQ page. That I researched on my own. No tech guy offered me to try this. And had tons of errors. After I've already reseated the ram. So then I ran the memory test on each card (4)- in the same slot. Yes it took all day. I found no errors. So I put them all in different slots. Ran the test again for all 4 and no errors found.

So either the first time I reseated them it didn't take or the ram didn't like the sots they were in.

But it's been over a week and I have seen no BSOD! Runs all my programs just fine. I'll have Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Outlook and Word open and using all at the same time. No more crashing!

The only problem I have now is printing:

(worked fine with my old laptop)
I have a desktop and my laptop both connected to a Netgear print server. The desktop prints fine (wired connection). When I try to print on my 7700 (wireless connection) in Word it will just close and ask if I want to send an error report. And in Internet Explorer the alienautospy crash will come up to send a screenshot and close my IE page I wanted to print.

If I tell it to print from the shared computer rather than the ip address it is at - it will close my program and then still print it.

Any ideas?

So my only complaint is why do they take 6 weeks to build it, run all these tests and it was clearly not 100% ?
On the work order form one program wouldn't install so they said it was a bad ram. And replaced it. Well they should of ran more tests...

Your "only" complaint is quite a HUGE complaint and should be taken up with AW. As I read more posts about people having problems with their new systems out of the box, I'm coming to believe more and more that their "200 Point Inspection," is performed on a totally random basis, if performed at all. Will any AW representatives shine some light on this area?

On the other hand, glad to hear your system came around... eventually. AW is lucky to have a customer like you who put all the responsibility of fixing the laptop on herself, when the laptop should have been in perfect working condition in the first place. Afterall, that's what you're paying for when you purchased from AW.

Sorry about the long post, but things like this get my blood boiling.

Hope you resolve your issue with your printer.
It is total crap that you had to fix it yourself. On the brightside though you'll be able to troubleshoot and fix about any small problem that may pop up.
Well I think AW's QA 200 point check is really Bull Puckies.

As far as the printer goes have you tried shutting off your firewall & antivirus SW and reinstall the printer SW. I banged my head with this one on a HP printer.

Seriously... I think the 200-point inspection is just a way to add padding to the phase game. After all, how many people would get upset about "an extra round of QA tests" as the reason for their brand new notebooks being a few days behind schedule?

It's just there to give you the warm fuzzies and defuse your hostility.
Their policies seem inconsistent too. One guy will say it's their policy to do one thing and another guy will tell you the exact opposite. Each guy will be very firm with it too, like there's some bibile of policy that they HAVE to adhere to, when clearly they don't since I just heard two oppisite things from two different people.
what kind of keyboard are you using? i'm noticing a weird thing with Photoshop8.0, the ctrl/alt/shift stuff doesn't seem to work.

on my other system i can make a selection on a layer, and press CTRL-T to do a free transform. on my 7700 with logitech wireless keyboard, I press the CTRL-T, and it immediatley acts like i'm just pressing the ctrl key. have you noticed this also?

Keyboard

I use:
Microsoft Wireless Multimedia keyboard and mouse.
All the shortcuts seem to work, I've never had a problem.

Amber,

I just bought my first Alienware and after reading
your post I am considering cancelling.

Your complaints pretty much line up with many others
that I have read across the Internet.

Tell me, has your problem been satisfactory solved yet?

It works perfect now. It was a lot of trouble in the begining, but it works great. It has not crashed once since I fixed it. It's very fast and I love it - now.

Amber,

A few last questions for a potential buyer.....

Was Customer Support helpful? Were you satisfied with your experience?

Would you recommend Alienware to me?

Thanks for everything!
