Craig's Review of the Sony VGN-S360 Sub-Notebook - Page 5

I use this

Super Cloth

works great on my Sony s360 screen, my Tosiba notebook, my LCD monitor and all the TVs mirrors, windows, my ceremic stove cooktop and stainless steel appliances. Using only warm tap water and wrung out until just damp. No streaks, no lint. Best product that I have found. Does a beautiful job.

For link/streak cleaning on glass or other smooth surfaces...believe it or not...try windex with newspapers as rags. I learned that trick from working behind a bar for 5 years. Its amazing...try it on your bathroom mirror first if you're skeptical.

What battery life do you get now that you've had the laptop for awhile, Craig?

It has not changed a bit...I can get up to 3 hours of heavy internet/wifi/bright screen. I'm sure it would go much further if I put on power management.

One thing I noticed in games (CS:Source to be exact) is that once the battery is charging up the machine seems to lag a bit. If the battery is 100% and the PC is running off the power cord the game runs fine...but if its charging, yuk! Really annoying.

Craig, did the Omega drivers help in resolving this probelm?

Its not a driver issue...its something about the battery charging that hogs resources from the PC...really strange.

btw...born and raised in S. Jersey...GO IGGLES!! (signed westbrook today)

Hard drive speed

Hey Craig and all the s360 users.

Im gonna be buyin wanna these beauties soon, very soon.

I saw some where the HD speed is 5400rpm, you dont comment on this on your review, which leads me to believe its not a problem. Im just a tad concerned. not that i do anything about it and itll have little effect id think, but feedback from s360 users wouldnt go a miss.

Cheers

Stoners-

There are two "families" of Sony S-series

The S270/S360 is in one family. They are non-Sonoma chips, have a 400MHz front side bus, and a Mobility Radeon 9700 GPU.

The S380/S460 is in another family. They run off of the newer Sonoma technology, which has a 533Mhz front side bus, and have a Geforce Go 6200 GPU.

The Sonoma S-series (S380/S460) has been reported as having lower battery life and a slower GPU. So despite the fact that it is newer technology, it is a small step back in performance.

Both the S380 (configurable on Sony.com) and S460 have 5400rpm hard drives. The S270 is configurable on Sony.com to have a 4200rpm or 5400rpm drive. The S360 comes with a 4200rpm drive. I am surprised you can still find an S360, since Sony stopped making them and retailers have been offering deep discounts and rebates to cut stock.

Hard drive speed is a personal preference. I personally found the performance of the 80GB 4200rpm hard drive in the S360 to be unacceptable, so I replaced it with a 60GB 7200rpm drive. By adding a 7200rpm hard drive and an extra 512MB of RAM, you can turn this demure little 4.2lb laptop into one screaming beast of a machine.

well i found me a s360 and will prob stick with them because its also the graphics im after and the 6200go jus aint gonna cut it.

Im deff gonna be puttin an extra 512 in it, before its prob even booted. I suppose ill have to wait and see really about the HD speed. Does it actually void the warranty if i replace it?

Just thought I'd update this thread...

Still going strong with stock hardware but have been eying the 512meg sticks of PC333 to have less swap file action happening.

In hindsight I would probably have bought the S270 with a faster drive...the 4200 is dreadfully slow loading games like Day of Defeat Source. I'm just not all about ripping out drives until my warranty has expired...and since I have a 2 year coverage chances are I'll end up selling the machine before then to upgrade anyway.

Noticed one stuck pixel yesterday as well.

Yet in all I'd say I'm as happy as could be with this laptop. The fact that it's as small as a textbook puts this lapper in its own class as far as I am concerened. I can whip this thing out and check my mail before my lunch is ready at the cafes. Then I can still fit my lunch AND my pc on the table . That's something I notice we can't all do with machines getting so big lately.

That sucks! same thing happen to me about a month ago after owning it for 4 months. My friend was watching a dvd and he noticed a stuck blue pixel in the very topleft. It only shows up with a black background. doesnt bug at all since its so small.

Around campus i see lots of peopl lugging around dell 9300. So I asked a girl in one of my classes about lugging one of those around, I mean shes like 5'5 110 Lbs carrying a 10lb laptop for 5 hour days. Anyways it just really bugs me

Very pleased to report this baby is rocking to this day! I'm so in love with this machine that I'm going to hang onto it for a workhorse 9-5 rig once I finally settle on a nice Duo/7800GTX gaming laptop. I could not live without the versatility of my sony.

I was playing some UT2004 last night and loving every one of the 13" inches of Xbrite goodness :-)

Oh, and playing online poker in my bed at night before I hit the hay would not be possible on a 17" gaming lapper.

is it possible to buy a S360 anymore? why would i want a S580 (that's the only 13.3 i can find that sony is making at the moment) when the S360 sounds perfect for me???

I won't link it (because the rules of the forum forbid ebay links) but you can find them on Ebay at a great price slightly used.
