Ahh I didn't know that.
So who do I contact then for this fix pack? Sager?

Yes, just contact Sager and they'll send it out to you right away. If you need to verify, flip out the KB and see that you don't have the kit installed that is shown in the pictures.

Ill get in touch with them then.

Keyboard issues

Well, I have the silver pad in the upper left, nothing in the other corners.. The upper left corner and both lower corners are fairly tight, while the upper middle of the keyboard sags a lot when pressing keys... Can they send two more pads out to fix this?

Thanks Adam

Still waiting

It's been more than a week since I contacted Sager about the keyboard issue. Mine is loose in the upper right. I have yet to receive the fix.

Reading the forums, I'm amazed at how so many people have a loose keyboard and many in different parts of it -- upper left, upper right, both sides, middle!

What was the tolerance level on the spex for this keyboard?

Is it normal to have a little bit of play in the middle/right of the 5680 keyboard. It's not too much at all but it's more then the old gateway i was using, which had absolutly no play. I'm not saying something's wrong as it's still pretty comfortable, just want to make sure.

Why?

Inexplicably, I have yet to receive the keyboard fix, even though I received my 8890 in August and contacted Sager immediately.

They're very prompt don't you think?

They said they sent one out on Aug. 29, and supposedly sent another on Monday.

Waiting ... waiting ... waiting. This is ridiculous.

Possibly the first got lost in the mail and the second 1 hasn't arrived yet.. if sager actually did ship them, there's not much they can do after they leave.. especially since they are probaly sent via us mail... also your sager does work so dont sweat it too much.. sure it'd be nice to have the keyboard fix but it really isnt delaying you from doing anything is it?

Well ... actually it is

In fact, it is preventing me from doing certain types of intensive spreadsheet work with this laptop, since I can't really feel comfortable with the number pad. There is no tactile response, it jumps up and down. So, yes my laptop works, but even though this is a more reasonable price than say an Alienware, it is still an expensive machine. And frankly I'm not happy it wasn't fully functional out of the box.

I wouldnt want to do intensive spreadsheet work using a laptop keyboard really.. I'd rather use an external keyboard....

u can bend the whole keyboard...but be very gentle and slightly bend it. i had the same problem with the middle...so i took out the keyboard and pulled up the left and right sides. do this very slowly and don't bend it up too much. worked like a charm.

It's here

OK. I can stop complaining. The fix finally arrived after 21 days. It appears we can't pin this one on the U.S. Postal Service though. Whoever actually sent it, put the wrong zip code on the package. I checked my e-mails. They had the correct zip code.

Anyways, I'll apply it when I get home from work and let you know how everything worked out.

I also have the keyboard problem in the upper right corner. It feels like the keys are bumping into something, and then it starts to shake as I tap in that region. Mine shipped in the 3rd week of shipping, so i thought that the problem should hav ebeen resolved, but guess not.

i had the same problem with the right side. i emailed sager for another piece of tape and they sent it the next day.

The fix is in

OK. I can stop complaining, whining and in general (deservedly) dumping on Sager about this keyboard issue. I put the fix in today and the keyboard is much improved. It still has a little overall flex to it but I'm sure it's supposed to. The wild up-and-down, right-hand corner action is gone. Here are a couple of notes and suggestions/cautions on applying the fix.

The keyboard unhinges and folds back very easily. Putting the mylar strip on top of the metal plate was easy. Getting the plate up was a little touchier. First, the manual says unscrew in three places, it's actually five places. The plate won't come up unless you unscrew the center two screws as well as the three in the manual photo.

The screws are very tiny, microscopic really. These are the kind of screws that I usually strip just by looking at them. So, I would suggest getting a pair of tweezers in addition to your small Philips head screwdriver to pick the screws up with when you unscrew them and place them in the holes when you are about to screw them back in.

The little round washer that goes on the underside of the plate is not only little, it's also in the microscopic category. I had to readjust it several times to make sure it wasn't blocking the hole.

One more thing, the manual says to shut the computer off, of course, but it doesn't say to unplug it. I suggest you unplug it. When I was first lifting the plate, the computer restarted. I had to wait to shut it down then unplug to continue.

I suppose it could still come on from its battery charge but it didn't for me.

That's it. It works. The end (I hope, touch wood and whistle) of problems. Oh, but then I had my first system problem with the machine today, but that's for another thread.
