kenji reported the problem in the Tech section. There is a conflict with the Smart Link Modem Drivers (mtlmnt5.sys) and the New R1.16 Drivers. It causes a BSOD. I had to do a restore from Safe Mode.

Ok it appears that it will not effect everyone. Not sure what the difference is

did you install the hotfix before installing it? the the MSQFE folder there is a hotfix required. 1 for 2003, 1 for sp1, and one for sp2. i think that might help.

Windows Update says I'm up to date.

WU doesnt have all the updates! some updates apply to certain people and not all of the windows users....ie hd audio which requres an update for xp but will be included in longhorn. u must install the update in order to have proper functionality.

why do i have a feeling that my laptop is going to perform so darn well in benchmarking? i guess it may be my expertise in windows and registry.

It's a good thing you said that. The 1.15 included KB835221 but KB888111 is included in 1.16. I will extract KB888111 out of the 1.16 and install that first then try the 1.16 again. But that will be later. I will report back waht happens.

Ok I extracted all the files.
1. I tried installing the KB888111 for WinXPSP2 (the version I have)
a. Same BSOD but this time was worse
b. \windows\system32\config\system - became corrupted so used my dual boot to replace the files from a backup and then did a System Restore from Safe Mode

2. Tride again and deleted the q* folder containing the 888111 and ran the setup that way. It worked fine. So I have installed 1.16 without the 888111 update.

I downloaded the driver and installed it just fine, no issues at all. I am running SP1 with no updates from MS.

SP1, that is one thing that might help to solve this.
