upgrading Dell's warranty, services and support

Can you easily upgrade or extend your Dell warranty after receiving your system?

Say you have only "1Yr Ltd Warranty/ 1Yr Mail-In Service and 1Yr Technical Support" but find something defective... can you then upgrade your warranty to include 1Yr At-Home Dell Service... or is it a question of timing?

You can increase the service to whatever you want as long as you pay for it, as I understand it. It might take a few days to come into effect though.

However, after the first 30 days you can not increase or add Complete Care to the system.

Thirty days to get Complete Care coverage and one year to extend regular warranty.

I needed a motherboard replacement because of a broken usb port. The warranty was for the mail in service. I was considering upgrading the warranty to 3 yrs at home and went ahead and did that. Took about a week or 10 days to kick in and after it did I had them come to my home and repair it. Dell usually sends you a letter within 30 days after you get your computer offering a discount on the upgraded warranty.

you can upgrade warranty any time during your warranty period, but it is prorated. normally if you do it within the first 45 days, you will get a better deal. even if you extend to say one additional year, you can reextend prior to the new year ending up to the max dell extends, so for another two years after that. but if you are extneding, it is cheaper to extend to the max since the subsequent years after two are far cheaper than just adding one year at a time. you pay full one year and then the second year is the cheaper year. if all that makes sense.

you can only get complete care within the first 30 days from invoice date and only if you are NOT in FL or NY.

What's an approximate price for upgrading to extended warranty (after or before the initial 45 days of the purchase) ?

I took Dell's offer and upgraded to 3 year at home service before the 45 days expired. According to Dell's offer I received, the service extension would cost $339 after 45 days and $269 within 45 days. If I bought within 45 days, Dell also offered me a $75 mail-in rebate in addition to the savings, bringing my total for 3 year at home service to $194 if I bougth within 45 days. So to summarize, after 45 days the cost would have been $339, within 45 days the cost was $194.

you have to ask dell, b/c they have promotions with rebates etc. just know that the third and fourth year is far cheaper than adding the second year on to the warranty. i had listed the cost somewhere on this forum before with the promotions of that time.

it's something like $200 for the second year then $65 for third and another $65 for the fourth year. if you get the two years, and decide that you want to extend it before the two years is up, you will pay more than $65 for that extra year (even though it seems that it would be the third year...you are actually paying one year so $200). if that makes sense. good way of looking at it is that you get package deal for having a longer warranty period and get charged the one year rate every time you want to add just one year

before the 45 days (extended warranty only, not complete care which you can only get 30 days from invoice date) you will get the whatever promotion rate. after 45 days, the second year is prorated.
